City Arts hopes awards unite Seattle’s art walk community, make for a good Capitol Hill party

If CHS were giving out an art walk award for April Blitz, artist Michael’s portrait project featuring Bauhaus patrons would be a Capitol-Hill-focused winner. (Image: Michael)

There wasn’t much “spring” in the air Thursday as artists and venues set up for the night’s April Capitol Hill art walk. But a plan for Spring Art Walk Awards from City Arts Magazine is hoped to help galvanize the city’s art walk scene and recognize some of the most talented artists in the region. The magazine has selected 6 artists to recognize as finalists from the Seattle spring art walk season. You’ll note that artists who showed on the Hill are well represented in the citywide awards:

  • Kate Protage, Phinneywood, Bherd Studios
  • Sarah Loertscher, West Seattle, Click!
  • Carla G, West Seattle, Carmilia’s
  • Greg Boudreau, Capitol Hill, Ghost Gallery
  • Jesse Higman, Capitol Hill, Vermillion
  • Karen Hackenberg, Capitol Hill, Vermillion

The real news is probably in the awards ceremony party announcement — that fun is slated for April 28th at E Boylston’s FRED Wildlife Refuge. Full details from City Arts are below. CHS is a co-sponsor of Capitol Hill’s walk — it’s cool to see an effort to bring the various art walks across the city together.

We’ve chosen 6 finalists for the spring Art Walk Awards.  Take a look through the slideshow above and then join us at the event to cast your ballot for the grand prize winner.  One location artist is going to be $1000 richer and appear in an upcoming issue of City Arts!

Cash prizes are provided by City Arts, Blue Moon beer and 4Culture.

About the Art Walk Awards: In 2011, four winners will each receive $1,000 and a profile of their artwork in City Arts magazineTogether with our 2011 partners, the Art Walk Consortium, businesses and galleries that participate in neighborhood art walks can nominate a favorite piece of art for each month.  Each spring, summer, winter and fall, we narrow dozens of submissions down to six finalists, and then throw a party in their honor (with delicious and free Blue Moon seasonal beers, music, food and more).  Anyone attending the event gets to vote for the winner and we’ll hand out the award that night.
