Here’s a rundown of East Precinct crime from the warm and mostly quiet on the bad guy end of things 4th of July weekend. We also reported earlier on a suspected drug overdose incident that sent two men to the hospital.
- 4th of July storage unit break-ins disrupted: An employee at a 12th Ave storage business stumbled upon two thieves working to clear units of valuables just after noon on the 4th. According to the report on the incident, the worker was doing a walk-through of the facility when she noticed several units with cut locks. She asked a man she found inside loading goods into a cart if he too had suffered a cut lock. The man said nope, everything is fine but the employee watched as another man approached the first to talk before the duo decided to make a dash for it. The responding officer found a variety of goods left behind on the storage facility’s floor including a wallet with “potentially fraudulent ID cards” and two checks reported stolen in a similar storage unit break-in reported earlier.
- 3rd of July brawl on Madison: One man was arrested after another man lost teeth
and was bloodied in a reportedly drunken brawl near IHOP on Madison early Sunday morning. Officers had difficulty understanding the inebriated victim who couldn’t fully explain why the fight had started. Witnesses told police the fight was precipitated when the victim spilled beer on the other man’s shoe while bowling inside the Garage and the two took the argument outside where the beer spiller was bloodied. The spiller told police he didn’t leave the Garage to fight. The suspect was interviewed at East Precinct and released. - MOHAI break-in: On Sunday July 3rd, somebody broke into Montlake’s Museum of History and Industry and stole two laptops.
- The MO of an apartment burglary team: This June 30th incident in which an Olive Street apartment dweller had his MacBook burgled provides an illustration of how the bad guys work this kind of crime:
At the time stamp of 1751 hours, the camera picked up two suspicious males that were visibly hanging out in the parking lot. V/ nor recognized the subjects as tenants or associated with the building. I was unable to verify races, but the "lookout" subject appeared to be tall and thin wearing a hoodie gray jacket, blue jeans, and talking on a cell phone. The second subject who appears towards the ladder portion of the footage was shorter with a heavy build, wearing a multi-colored t-shirt, dark cargo shorts, and pink sneakers. The footage clearly picks up the taller subject pacing back and forth in the parking lot area acting as lookout. The footage then shows the heavier shorter subject enter into camera view from the direction of the victim's apartment. The footage also shows the heavier subject placing something into a bag or backpack as he walked away from the property with the first subject. At that time I instructed to retain the security camera footage as follow-up unit may be interested in viewing the tape. informed me that the footage is on a storage system that last for months. I then provided V/ with a case number and advised his to call police with any additional information regardiing this case. I also left V/ with a victim follow-up report so he could locate and mail in the particular numbers of his laptop.
