Fire damages home on E Harrison — UPDATE: French horn saved, stove to blame

A fire just after noon inside an E Harrison home involved the kitchen stove but had nothing to do with lunch. Investigators believe materials placed on top of the stove as new tenants moved into the 1700 block E Harrison home caught fire and started the Monday afternoon blaze, SFD spokesperson Kyle Moore tells CHS.

Moore said the tenants preparing to move into the house haven’t yet moved out of their previous residence so will still have a place to stay.

We’re told firefighters were able to rescue many possessions from the home including the tennants’ french horn but that damage to the house from smoke and water will total $70,000. Moore said the home did not suffer significant structural damage in the fire but will require an extensive clean-up before it can be inhabited again.

Original report: A single family home suffered significant damage in a Monday afternoon fire in the 1700 block of E Harrison.

OK, mostly off topic, but still: If you live in a small space, and are planning a party that does not include you preparing hot food, turn the breaker off for your stove.

I learned this the hard way. I was hosting a party, leaning against the stove. Drinking, having a few laughs, when I burned my hand bad. Turns out my ample back end had knocked one of the burners on, and I inadvertently put my hand on it.

To my credit as a hostess, I didn’t react (there’s nothing worse than a drama queen hostess). I just slid over to the sink, casually turned on the cold water, and even more casually stuck my hand under the faucet. But I learned my lesson.

And this lesson seems even more suitable for move-in day. If you have strange people coming into your space, and you aren’t planning on cooking, turn the breaker off.

Durring my first week living in Seattle, I was napping one afternoon in my new apartment and was awoken by the smell of something burning… I followed my nose into the kitchen to find the large burner on the stove on full blast. Apparently one of my cats had jumped up onto the stove and hit the knob on her way up… I’m just thankful that I didn’t happen to have anything sitting on the stove at the time. Ever since, I keep the knobs off the stove at all times (unless I’m using it, of course).
