Armed man at Belmont and Pine turns out to be guy trying to pawn an air gun

More weirdness from the day of the Great Capitol Hill Blackout of 2011: SPD was called to the Capitol Loans pawn shop Monday afternoon for a report that a man inside the business at Boylston and Pine was carrying a pistol and a red laser pointer — turned on — when he entered the store and was behaving strangely.

According to the report on the late afternoon incident (before the blackout, by the way), the caller working at the pawn shop told police he, too, was armed but worried about what the man with the pistol might do after the man placed the gun on the shop’s counter and began rifling through his bag. The caller said the man’s movements were “all over the place.”

The officer arrived and entered the shop with the two reportedly armed men still inside. After securing the location, the cop found out that the gun on the counter was an Airsoft air pistol that the man claimed he had brought into the shop to pawn along with the laser pointer and other goods in his bag.

The officer advised the man on the dangers of carrying a realistic looking weapon into a pawn shop and took the air pistol into evidence.

Why did they need to steal his toy? I’m not sure I’m comfortable knowing that if somebody mistakenly calls in something on me, that it can be confiscated. What if it was a flashlight or a Harry Potter wand? Now he can’t sell it? What if he needs whatever money he can get now instead of when (if?) he gets it back? Also, I have no idea, so if somebody knows, please, let me know, but I thought pawn shops even sold REAL guns sometimes.

Agreed but I’m wondering if the “suspect” was in a state of mind that gave officers the same concern it gave the employee?

Also, open carry is legal in Washington.

seriously… they can just TAKE whatever they want into evidence just because someone thought you were a little weird looking?

He’ll get it back. By the way, Capitol loans deals with all kinds of nutjobs, and I trust their judgment on something like this.

They had other similar robberies, and wanted to lift for prints to see if any matched.
