BBQ fire singes condo near Seattle U

A small fire at a condo building near Seattle University was quickly extinguished Monday night but the event makes for a good warning as Seattle’s summer finally kicks in. According to Seattle Fire, the fire at the Epic Condominium building at 412 11th Ave was started by a barbecue that burned through the balcony of a 6th floor unit.

There were no injuries and damage was limited but the fire was at risk of spreading to the building structure. If you live in an apartment or condo, make sure to have a fire extinguisher on hand if you plan to do any balcony-based barbecuing — and never leave the grill unattended.

Wait so that’s legal here? I’ve never lived in a state/city where it was legal to have a grille on a balcony. With how overprotective laws here tend to be, I’m a bit surprised.

This is not an opinion shared by the state Building Codes Council, which, under the approval of the state Legislature, adopted the ban last year. Forbidden after July 1, 2004, is open flame gas and charcoal grilling on apartment or condominium decks made from combustible materials and lacking an overhead sprinkler.
This means no grilling on the vast majority of wooden decks. Some — not all — metal and concrete decks bracketed by non-flammable walls might be exempt if there are no flammable materials nearby. Electric grills remain legal.
