- The Seattle City Council on Monday signed off on a plan to require city businesses with five or more employees to provide paid sick leave starting in September 2012. The bill requires businesses to provide paid sick days for employees to recuperate or provide care to an ill family member. Some high profile Capitol Hill entrepreneurs threw their support behind the bill including Molly Moon Neitzel, Jody Hall of Cupcake Royale and Dave Meinert of CHS advertiser Big Mario’s. New businesses that are less than two-years-old are exempt from the law.
HOUSING, HUMAN SERVICES, HEALTH, AND CULTURE COMMITTEE:1. Council Bill 117216 PASSED AS AMENDED (8 – 1, Conlin Opposed) Relating to employment in Seattle; adding a new chapter 14.16 to the Seattle Municipal Code; establishing minimum standards for the provision of paid sick and paid safe time; prescribing penalties, remedies and enforcement procedures; amending Section 3.14.931 of the Seattle Municipal Code; and requesting a post- implementation assessment from the Seattle Office for Civil Rights.

Mayor Mike McGinn and City Council parks committee head Sally Bagshaw unveiled a plan to help keep the city’s community centers operating while shaving more than $1 million from the city’s pinched budget. The plan calls for a restructuring of the city’s community center system to create service areas grouping existing centers together and providing tiers of staffing to enable one fully-staffed facility in each area. Capitol Hill’s geographic region features the Garfield Community Center in the Central District as our “service level 1” facility with the Miller Park Community reduced to “service level 2b,” the lowest staffing level for any city-managed centers. Some centers like the Cascade People’s Center will continue on the path to being managed by organizations and non-profits.
