‘Paper Houses’ brings rock ‘n roll, pop art to Annex Theatre

SEATTLE, March 14, 2012 – Pop art and bouncy garage jams will meld at Annex Theatre March 28 – March 31 during the play “Paper Houses,” a comedy about a neighbor’s billboard that blocks expensive views of an encroaching development.

The audience is advised to leave their fancy opera glasses behind unless they’re secret flasks, because Seattle’s favorite garage duo, Pony Time, is taking control of Annex Theatre’s famous sound system.

“Annex has dual eighteen-inch subs installed under audience seating,” said Jen Moon, the “Paper Houses” director and Annex Theatre staff member. “We refer to them as ‘taint shakers.’”

Looming pop art billboards will embrace the audience throughout the show. Periodically, new graphics will be pasted up while Pony Time performs.

The billboard designs were crafted by internationally-acclaimed design studio Modern Dog Design Co.

“We had fun,” said Michael Strassburger, co-founder of Modern Dog. “Our goal was to design something that helped tell the story of the play via the familiar aesthetic of a billboard ad.”
