Another gunpoint robbery reported near Capitol Hill’s Meany campus

There has been another gunpoint robbery reported in the area around the Meany school campus at 19th and John. Monday, police were called to the area after a man said he was held up by a male with a silver handgun just before 4p.

According to the report on the incident, the victim told police he was walking near 21st and E John when the suspect came up to him brandishing a silver pistol and demanding he hand over everything he was carrying. The man complied, handing the gun-toting suspect his phone, his wallet and the bag he was carrying. The suspect then told the man to walk away from the scene as the suspect walked away eastbound on E John. The victim went to a nearby house where he called 911 but the suspect was nowhere to be found by the time police arrived.

Nearby schools utilizing the Meany campus were placed in lockdown for a short time during the police response to the incident, according to SPD.

Monday’s robbery comes days after an incident just a few blocks away at 21st and Mercer Thursday night in which a woman reported the suspect held a gun to her head — and pulled the trigger of the unknown pistol type — in a robbery just after 7:30 PM.

The suspect described by victims in both incidents was a young black male in his teens or 20s. The most recent incident report includes additional details describing the suspect as around 5’6″, 140 pounds, with medium brown complexion, and black, cornrow-style hair.

I’m reading the police report from Thursday’s robbery and it says the suspect was apprx 5’11”, 130 lbs. I could not find a report for Monday’s incident (aside from the auto-generated one that doesn’t provide any details). If Monday’s suspect is 5’6″ 140 lbs, we got 2 crazies on the loose?

Generally speaking, as a woman who walks from these bus stops often – at night I make a point to purposely walk in the middle of road where it’s the most open and best lit. Not sure that would help with this guy. Probably going to buy some mace.

It’s not unusual for victims and witnesses to provide varied descriptions especially in stressful circumstances. As for my source of information, I contacted SPD about details of the report.

You’re going to try to mace a guy who’s pointing a gun at you? Not a great idea.

Did the SPD say they were going to add extra patrols? Or anything like that?

FYI, You can buy pepper spray (mace) very cheaply on eBay, in lots of different formats.

“I had heard about the woman who was robbed near our house at 21st and Mercer. According to one of our neighbors, the man used a pellet gun to shoot her.”

A Primer on Situational Awareness

We live in a big, dense city with big city problems.
I applaud and support the SPD, but the SPD can only do so much.
Most of the time you are on your own. The keys to protecting
yourself are mental preparation, awareness of potential problems,
and quick decisions of action. Sh*t does indeed happen, but
preparing yourself can reduce this happening to you.

Good luck.

How can a male 5’11’ weight 130 pounds? Most women around 5’3″ weigh this much. He must be very young or very hungry/ill. SPUtilities need to replace all the burned out lights in the neighborhood.

I’ve seen the same account but the SPD report narrative (available to anybody here http://web6.seattle.gov/mnm/policereports.aspx ) doesn’t specify the type of weapon. It’s not uncommon for suspects to use airgun style weapons but until SPD says for certain, please be cautious with speculation and unconfirmed details.

Those of you in the neighborhood, if there are burned out street lights, report them on the seattle city light streetlight outage site. Google it. you will need the number on the pole and the basic location. They can only fix, what they know is broken. All lights should always be working. I’ve done it in my neighborhood.

You can report streetlight outages to Seattle City Light via the internet: http://www.seattle.gov/light/streetlight/form.asp
Alternatively, you can phone them at (206) 684-7056 or via email at street.light.gov

Please, please, please utilize this service as they’ve been replacing the burnt out bulbs with new LEDs with a response time of 10 days at the most.

Crime on capitol hill has been escalating. Burglaries up 75%, muggings, petty theft etc are all up. Write the mayor and the city council members to help get action. I received a response from Tim Burgess but nothing from the Mayor or the others yet. We need to act. It’s been years since we’ve had patrols in our area. The only way to get action is to keep asking.

It does say teens/early twenties. (And a lot of guys don’t fill out until later.) I know a sixteen year old kid who is 6’1″ and 120.

Just fyi, it will be “pepper spray” that you want to get, not “mace”… Mace, in the traditional sense, is not legal for people to use but pepper spray is and will even affect someone under the influence. Keep it easily accessibly when walking around.

I hope the robber had a permit for his handgun. Wouldn’t want to violate the law would he….

If the perpetrator is doing drugs (not a huge stretch of the imagination), it is entirely possible that he is underweight. This fact (i.e., that he is scrawny) does NOT negate the potential danger; quite the contrary if he is doing drugs.

Depends on where you are on the hill.

And one more note to “Tim” regarding his opinion of utilizing pepper spray: In the last attack against the woman, she was GRABBED, SPUN AROUND, AND A GUN WAS POINTED AT HER — after which, she was subsequently shot. So listen, pal, you’re obviously a guy. For any woman who has been surprised and is that close to her attacker (most especially, if it is a “him or me” situation wherein she could be killed), you bet’cher bippee pepper spray is a viable option for self defense. Many of us (women) are smaller than whatever weight this guy is so, I have every intention of employing any and all defenses at my disposal should I ever find myself in a similar position.

Yes, of course we should report burned-out street lights and I have done so. But do we know if a nonfunctioning light was a factor in these two recent incidents? My guess is that these urban thugs will do the crime whether or not the area is lighted.
