Car crash sparks First Hill gas station fire

Thankks

Thanks to @seattle_12s for the photos from the scene.

Seattle Fire wrestled a gas station blaze quickly under control Thursday morning after a car reportedly smashed into a pump near Terry and James.

According to Seattle Fire radio dispatches, the fire was reported just before 9:20 AM and was under control less than 10 minutes later as the car continued to smolder. SFD credits the station’s clerk with acting quickly to help keep the situation from getting out of hand. “After quickly noticing the flames, the clerk at the gas station hit the emergency fuel shut off valve preventing more fuel from igniting,” the SFD report on the incident, below, notes.

There do not appear to be any injuries associated with the crash and fire.

A Seattle Police collision investigation is also underway at the scene.

UPDATE: The crash reportedly involved a hit and run driver who left the scene westbound on James. Police are looking for a black, late 2000s Chevy Monte Carlo with “significant damage” to the passenger side. The SPD report below says the driver told police he was cut off by another vehicle — but did not collide with it.

Here’s a report from Seattle Fire on the incident:

Seattle Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire at a First Hill gas station after a car collided with a fuel pump.

At 9:18 a.m. dispatchers at the Fire Alarm Center received multiple 911 calls reporting flames coming from the fuel pump at a gas station located at the corner of Terry Avenue and James Street.

Capitol Hill’s Engine Company 25 arrived first to find heavy black smoke and about eight foot flames coming from a car that had sheared off a fuel pump from its base. The driver of the car escaped the burning vehicle by exiting through his passenger door. He was uninjured.

A second car, that was parked and fueling, suffered smoke and heat damage. The driver of this vehicle was also uninjured.

After quickly noticing the flames, the clerk at the gas station hit the emergency fuel shut off valve preventing more fuel from igniting. The clerk then sprayed the fire with dry-chemical extinguishers. After arriving, firefighters quickly knocked down the flames.

The Seattle Police Department is investigating the cause of the accident.

UPDATE: SPD has posted its report on the incident:

Seattle Police and Fire responded to a collision between a vehicle and gas pumps at the 76 Station in the 900 Block of James Street this morning around 9:15.   The collision resulted in a fire which was quickly extinguished.

The driver of the Lincoln told officers that he was driving westbound on James Street, in the far right lane and approaching the 76 Station when another vehicle cut him off and caused him to drive up onto the sidewalk, travel through the bushes, and then strike the gas pumps before stopping.  The force of the collision pushed the entire pump off its  foundation and immediately started a fire.  The driver of the victim vehicle was able to escape his car without injury.

When the collision occurred, another person was sitting in her vehicle, at the gas pumps, directly next to the pumps that had been struck.  The woman was able to get out of her car without injury as well, however, heat from the fire damaged her rental car.

Seattle Fire responded and put out the fire quickly.  The 900 Block of James Street was closed to westbound  traffic for about an hour.

I hope the quick thinking and brave station employee gets a paycheck through the repair of the station, AND a bonus for his efforts.
Well done!
