  • Speakerphone defense: SPD has released more details about a purse snatch attempt we first reported here. A robbery victim used a phone to foil an attempted mugging late Thursday night. Around 2 AM, the victim was walking past a parking lot in the 600 block of E Pine St when a couple began following and made a grab at the victim’s purse, according to police. The victim called 911 and put the phone on speaker, at which point the suspects ran off, police say.
  • Double heroin overdose: Medics responded to a van parked on E Pine near 11th Ave Tuesday night around 9:30 after a caller said a man in his 20s was unconscious from an apparent heroin overdose. Seattle Fire arrived to find two people in the vehicle who had apparently overdosed and rushed both victims to Harborview.
  • Traffic dispute: A traffic dispute at 14th and Marion grew heated Sunday when a man threatened another man with a loaded .45 caliber handgun:

Pointed Gun During Traffic Dispute Lands Man in Jail

A man is in jail after he got into an argument with another man over a traffic/parking dispute on Capitol Hill early this morning.

At around 2:20 this morning, East Precinct officers responded to what was initially reported as an armed robbery at 14th Avenue and East Marion Street.  A vehicle description was broadcast, and officers located the suspect vehicle at James Street and I-5.  The car was stopped and the suspect was taken into custody.  The suspect told officers there was a gun inside the car and gave officers permission to search the car.  A  loaded .45 caliber handgun was recovered.

During the investigation it was revealed that the suspect and the victim had been in a verbal altercation over a traffic or parking dispute.  The victim was on his cell phone and tried to ignore the suspect.  According to the victim, the suspect attempted to grab the cell phone out of the victim’s hand.  When that was not successful, the suspect went to his car and pulled up next to the victim, pointing a handgun at him.  The victim told the suspect he was on the phone with 911.  The suspect then left the area and was stopped by police later.  The suspect, 43, was arrested and booked into the King County Jail.

  • Not a car vs. ped hit and run: A man initially believed to have been a victim of a hit and run near 14th and Pine early Sunday morning turned out to be merely intoxicated, according to Seattle Fire. Police and medics were called to the scene after an injured man was found in the area. But it turns out no car was involved in the 2 AM incident. The victim was transported to Harborview for treatment.

Chair rider taken for mental evaluation: SPD has tell of a wild ride on the streets of northwestern Capitol Hill… via office chair:

Officers Put an End to Man’s Early Morning Office Chair Ride
Written by Jonah Spangenthal-Lee on July 18, 2013
At around 2:30 this morning, Seattle police got a call about a rolling down the western side of Capitol Hill in an office chair, and found the man near Lakeview Boulevard and E. Highland Drive.
When officers contacted the man—who was carrying a set of drum sticks, had a hubcap tied to his arm, and was wearing motorcycle goggles and several scarves and purses—he sat down in his chair and told police he was “late for a gig.”
The 29-year-old man initially gave police a fake name and then told officers to handcuff him.
After obliging the man’s request, officers sat the man back down in the chair and rolled him over to the curb. The man then rolled himself back into traffic and fell out of his chair (it happens to the best of us) but was caught by one of the officers.
As police helped the man over to the curb and sat him down again, he spat at an officer. The man missed the officer, but warned his salvo of spittle was simply a “warning” shot.
Officers then searched the man and found he was carrying a 12″ crowbar, and had stuffed a belt buckle and necklace into his gloves.
Officers took the man to Harborview for a mental health evaluation.

  • UPDATE19th/Roy baby carriage arson? Seattle Fire and SPD were called to the 700 block of 19th Ave E Thursday afternoon around 4:30 to a report that a man had tried to set fire to a baby stroller left abandoned on the sidewalk. Ladder 10’s fire crew and SPD officers arrived on the scene to find the old carriage on top of a charred pile of debris on the west side of the street. A trail of wet pavement indicated that the 911 caller who reported the flames may have also decided to douse them.IMG_1239

No, they risked their lives for their pride and the good humans in this race. Until the docile fight back, evil wins. Bravo to these two for not taking thuggery anymore!

When someone tries to fight back against a criminal with a gun, it is foolishness, not bravery. He/she runs a very high risk of being shot or even killed. And, you are delusional if you think fighting back in such circumstances will dissuade the thugs from their criminal behavior.

Oh Calhoun….
I have been in this situation, much worse in fact and would fight back again for my own personal pride at the very least. Criminals will keep coming as our society becomes more populated and lawless. Call it foolish, I didn’t not work so hard in life to be taken from. Now have at it in response, as I know you will but you won’t change my mind on this.

A fat lot of good your hard work will be worth when you’re dead at the feet of a common criminal.

Sad to see the hill turning into Chicago. I won’t feel bad anymore when I see thugs about crossing the street and avoiding them.

Chicago? Huh? Oh yeah, I forgot that right-wing Republican white supremacists are using “Chicago” as a symbol of violence (mostly because the President lived there at one time…yawn.)
Here’s something for you to ponder, Mr. Neo-Nazi: The rate of violent crime in Chicago is 45 percent lower than it was in the 1990’s. If you’d like to attribute that drop to Rahm Emmanuel and President Obama, go right ahead.

Bill, your post was unnecessary and did little to further your political agenda.

We have to do something about these office chair riders before they take over the neighborhood.

It’s possible that these two guys believe something I’ve been believing for a time – that some of these muggers in Capitol Hill aren’t using real guns.

It’s not a risk, I’d take, mind you – I’m not trained in any hand-to-hand combat, It’s possible these two guys were.
