Man Robbed of Phone in Cal Anderson Park
A 19-year-old man walking through Cal Anderson Park last night was robbed at gunpoint last night as he walked through the park.

The man was walking through the park near the basketball courts around 8:30 pm when he was approached by the suspect.  The suspect asked the victim for the time.  The victim pulled out his cell phone to read the time.  The suspect then grabbed the phone and began to walk away.  The victim tried to physically take the phone back, but the suspect brandished a silver colored handgun and pointed it at the victim.  The victim fled and called 911 from another location.

Officers responded and searched the area but did not locate the suspect.  He was described as a black male, 20′s, approximately 6’00 tall, thin build, wearing a black and grey hooded sweatshirt.  The victim was not injured.

  • E Harrison purse snatch: Earlier this week, a woman told police she had her purse snatched while walking in 1700 block of E Harrison. Here is the SPD report on the 7 PM Monday  incident.

  • Alleged QFC booze thief assaults cop: A man being arrested for allegedly ripping off booze from the Harvard Market QFC found himself in even deeper trouble when he reportedly kicked a police sergeant assisting in placing the suspect in a holding cell at the 12th and Pine East Precinct headquarters Friday afternoon. The incident began with a QFC security guard reporting that he was punched by the suspect as the man attempted to flee with the boosted booze around 3 PM. The suspect reportedly also downed a portion of his ill-gotten liquor before fleeing from the area of the store and being chased down by police on Boylston. The suspect was booked for investigation of robbery and assaulting a police officer.

Are the rangers who were hired by the City to patrol Cal Anderson only engaged to do so until 5pm or so? I know it is silly and repetitive to say but 8:30 pm is still awfully early for this sort of crime. Since it is becoming increasingly dark earlier and earlier now, I guess that 5pm is going to present a problem for people walking home after work in the vicinity of CA Park. Take heed.

Same old same old. The thugs only come out at night and the days are getting shorter.

The ol’ “What time is it?” ploy seems to be an increasingly common vehicle for cell phone thefts. Next time someone asks me the time I will check my watch (I’m old fashioned like that) or respond, “I don’t know.” Not worth the risk.

Better yet, just run. Who cares if they laugh at you behind your back? Seriously, if anyone is such a loser they have no idea what time it is, have no watch, or cellphone–what could they possibly be late for that would be of any importance?

Not only don’t respond to questions, avoid that area like the plague after dark.

Criminals will size you up based on what they see. Can they take you on without getting beat, will they have to fight, can they get away, are there any witnesses. If they like what they see then you are a target. Next is the ole “what time is it” or “do you have a smoke”. This is their lead into their target and based on how you respond will determine if they will proceed with the crime. Good honest living people with big sympathetic hearts are their favorite. This type of person will not put up a fight and the likely chances of success are better than fair. If you come across as confident and very capable of handling yourself then this “lead in” is their last chance to abort their mission. If you are the type of person they are looking for then by all means plan your route and have company with you when in dark and lonely places. If you are the confident mean SOB type then enjoy your freedom to move about. Nothing is 100% and the use of a gun always makes a difference for either party. Good luck out there.
