Have something people should know about? Add it to our free community events listings. You can keep track of what’s going on every day on the CHS Calendar.

Local Sightings Film Festival

localProduced by Northwest Film Forum, the Local Sightings Film Festival opens on Friday with a screening of Walking Against the Wind by Brendan Flynn at 8p, followed by a festival Opening Night party starting at 10p. Free festival events this weekend include a mini-screening of animated films made at the Red Wall in Cal Anderson Park (at dusk on Saturday at the Red Wall by the fountain), and a digital camera expo on Sunday.

Local Sightings is the Northwest’s premiere showcase of new films, putting homegrown talent in front of Seattle audiences and connecting artists from Alaska to Oregon in a week-long celebration of cinema from the region. Produced by Northwest Film Forum, the festival features new films, juried prizes and killer parties. The 2013 festival includes new features, shorts and documentary programming, as well as conversations with filmmakers and film industry networking events.

Local Sightings continues at Northwest Film Forum through October 3rd.

Free Stuff: Zero Landfill Upcycle Event

If you are at all creative, arty, crafty, a maker, or provide craft supplies to kids, you really should check out the Free Upcycle Event at Miller Community Center on Saturday and Sunday.  We went to this event last year and scored some awesome items. Everything is free: take what interests you and what you can use. What you’ll find are samples from interior designers and architects such as carpet tiles, fabric samples for days, glass blocks, tile, shelving, wallpaper books, and more.

Fall Restoration Party at Volunteer Park

Help maintain our neighborhood gem of a park on Sunday and learn more about the Volunteer Park Trust. All ages are welcome to work, and tools and gloves (plus donuts and coffee!) are provided. Hours are 10a – 2p, and you can help for all or just some of the time. Meet at the Black (hole) Sun, rain or shine, at 10a.

I am very disappointed with the new On The List format. I used to read this blog primarily for the weekend activities listing. Now it’s sparse, uninspiring and hard to navigate. Why fix something that wasn’t broken, CHS?
