A man was stabbed outside City Market and a possible suspect escaped on foot sparking a large search around lower Capitol Hill as police looked for the assailant. The victim in the attack entered the market after being stabbed, according to SPD.

The near midnight attack filled the area with emergency vehicles. Witnesses reported the suspect was standing nearby but police were unable to apprehend the man before he fled on foot, according to police radio reports.

Seattle Fire said it was transporting the victim, a man in his 30s, to Harborview in stable condition.

We don’t yet have a confirmed description of the suspect or what happened inside City Market. According to police radio dispatches, officers were searching for an Asian or Hispanic male wearing a black leather jacket and a dark baseball cap.

UPDATE: Here is the SPD report on the attack:

A 30-year man reported that he was stabbed just after midnight while standing outside of a market in the 1700 Block of Bellevue Avenue. The injury, a single stab wound under his right arm pit, was treated at the scene by Seattle Fire and not considered to be life-threatening. The victim was later transported to the hospital for further treatment.

Witnesses reported seeing the victim standing outside of the City Market, holding a 2 foot long piece of two by four, in a verbal argument with another man. Shortly after, the victim entered the market saying he had been stabbed. The suspect, described as an Asian or Hispanic male, approximately 5’08″, thin build, wearing a baseball cap and black leather jacket, was last seen headed eastbound on East Howell.
Officers conducted an area search but did not locate the suspect. The victim would not provide much information about the assault to the officers at the scene.

Police were interviewing several witnesses who were in the area at the time of the attack. A K9 unit was dispatched but could not be successfully deployed because of the amount of foot traffic in the area masking any potential scent of the suspect’s getaway route.

  1. City Market is the cornerstone of a bad cluster of activity and has attracted a rough element for years (to their credit they do try to maintain it). I lived across the street for 6 years and they don’t call it Heroin Alley behind there for no reason. I contacted City Council members, including Sally (spineless) Bagshaw about improving safety along Bellevue-with no response. Things like improved lighting and police on foot patrol. I have noticed some improvement, but than this. From Olive to Pike, Benson’s to City market a derelict population gathers to menace those of us who live in the neighborhood (true many of them live there too, especially on S(l)ummet.

    • Yeah, I walk that block of Bellevue every day, often at night. I’m always worried about my own safety, let alone my girlfriend who lives in one of those buildings across the street. More lights please.

  2. Within a 4-6 block radius of that corner there has been a lot of crime lately. I know City Market has done their part for years to cut down on the crime in and around their store. The Capitol Hill business community needs to get together and come up with a neighborhood strategy for deterring and preventing crime in the neighborhood, I think. I would attend those meetings as a consumer/citizen.
