Earshot Jazz Films — Northwest Film Forum teams up with Earshot Jazz Festival to showcase jazz films during the festival, October 18th through 24th.
“Each year, as part of the Earshot Jazz Festival, we present films that shed light on the vibrant history of this great American art form, and the lives of some of its greatest composers and performers. Join us for Lady Be Good, a profile of female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their fascinating, groundbreaking journeys from the Roaring ’20s through to the 1970s. Another highlight: Rova Channeling Coltrane, which looks at 12 innovative master-musicians in a one-time, euphoric incarnation of John Coltrane’s mighty Ascension.”
Screening this weekend for Earshot Jazz are Lady Be Good (Friday) and Les Bank on Jazz (Saturday and Sunday). Also showing at Northwest Film Forum starting Friday is the Seattle premiere of The Institute a documentary which looks at “an emergent new art form, where real world and fictional narratives merge to create unforeseen and often unsettling consequences.” (trailer)
Geek Girl Con — The third annual Geek Girl Con “celebrates and honors the legacy of women in all aspects of geek culture, including science and technology; comics, the arts, and literature; and gaming.” The Con is not just for girls: it welcomes anyone who self-identifies as “geek” and supports the achievements of women in geek culture. The weekend programming includes a DIY Science Zone,a costume contest, evening events, and talks on a variety of topics, including Comics for Social Change, Crowdfunding for Social Change, Edible Astronomy,and Kids of the New Normal.
Geek Girl Con is at the Convention Center on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $45 for both days, and discounted to just $5 for kids aged 5 – 10. See the full guide and programming here.
