Seriously. Enough with this font.
No thank you.
Yes this is exactly what we needed in capitol hill, another place to buy beer at! I am so glad its opening here!–note sarcasm. I am sick to death of capitol hill being someplace that people just come to get drunk. We really DO NOT need this ridiculous establishment. Everyday I walk by it and cringe, we dont need any more bars in capitol hill. I hope it fails miserably and closes. Stop shoving alcohol down our throats, its the worst drug you can do and in my opinion falls into the category of crystal meth. Alcohol does absolutely NOTHING good for the body, mind or spirit. At least cannabis actually does something good for the user. Shoot heroin does more for your body, mind and spirit than alcohol. Stay away from society all those that open up bars for people to get drunk in, go and open a business that does some good for society. I truly hope the owners LOSE!
…”Stop shoving alcohol down our throats”…
Do you get forced into the bar? Do they waterboard you with various tropical drinks? I envy you.
Actually from what I’ve read, nicotine is much more dangerous than alcohol. Smoking is more addictive and causes more damage to the body. So alcohol is not the “worst drug you can do.”
At first I thought your comments were satire, but then I realized they are not. Heroin less dangerous than alcohol? Get real, and please stop exaggerating to try and make a point.
Genuinely excited. I think there are a lot of places to drink on the hill as another user noted, but I feel that the sports bar format is nearly non-existant on the hill.
Also, maybe there is another forum to rage about the ills of alcohol? This is a sign and symptom of development, not the end of the world. I know there are lots of smaller neighborhoods in the city that have a different cultural flavor and vendor composition than the hill. If a beer bar is really so upsetting, I encourage those flamers to explore their options.
Yay beer and sports! And patios!
It’s simply wrong to say that “…the sports bar format is nearly non-existant on the hill.”
Let’s see, there’s the chieftan, clever dunnes, 95-slide, sams, madison pub, and auto battery. Am I missing any?
r – FTW.
Really? You just called Capital Hill residents flamers? And yes BTW there are a good half dozen sports bars on the hill.
I was sort of blown away by that too. But I’ve got to think he meant “flaming” in the internet context, as in: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flaming_(Internet). Still, poor choice of words.
*Captiol Hill
Chieftan – Central District
Sam’s – Divey Burger Bar, maybe 2 TVs?
Mad Pub – Divey Gay Bar, 3 TVs?
95 slide – Given
Clever Dunnes – Divey Irish Bar, 2 TINY TVs?
Auto Battery – I guess they at least have TVs.
1 yes 1 maybe 4 NOPES. A TV in a dive does not make a sports bar, but I know there are legions of hipsters ready to flame on me. 2 legit out of hundreds of bars/restaurants MIGHT indicate an under served or nearly non-existent segment. Yay world of Beer! Has anyone actually been there yet? 1 4-star yelp this morning.
Also, a flamer is a troll. LMGTFY…
I sense some severe butthurt in this region. I guess it’s safe to assume that Outofmyhood is affiliated with world of beer in some way.
“Flamer” is also a derogatory slang term for a gay male.LMGTFYLOL It’s an extremely poor word choice when speaking about a neighborhood that is known for being gay/gay-friendly.
Thanks R. I’m gay. I can use a dictionary. I am not with WOB. I am excited by this place. I am never offended by the shortcomings or misperceptions of others. But this isn’t about me. Thanks for playing.
Newsflash. The word gestapo are watching. If you use a word they don’t like for whatever misguided and context-devoid reason, get ready for some off-topic comment FLAMING.
Anyway, YAY WORLD OF BEER.
I love it when someone corrects a mis-spelling, then also mis-spells “Capitol Hill”!!
Just waiting find out if we can hear the live music from half a block away.
Expect to hear Sugar Ray and Red Hot Chili Peppers on the nightly.
Guess I’ll have to let the tubes on the Hi-Fi warm up and crank up KING-FM.
As of 6pm, much to my surprise I’m not hearing any music out of WoB. Just the regular screaming from the place that shall not be named across the street.
I’m going to say it out loud. FUCK Black Coffee Co op. That place is a pox.
Based on reviews from other locations it will suck. The taps seem to be dominated by shitty beer aimed at the sports crowd, and the prices are said to be high. I’ll stick to the Pine Box.
Let’s just wait for the “Invisible Hand” to do its work:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Invisible_Hand
They don’t make beer there so there’s no “means of production” for the masses to seize. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Means_of_production
lol wut
The fact that the posts about people getting robbed and assaulted get at most a comment or two while the post about a national beer chain opening gets a massive wall of shrieking comments says a lot about people’s mindsets in this neighborhood.
Maybe its just me but I have seen a rising tide of junkies and street youth ruining the neighborhood way more than some new bar. My building gets broken into once a month (not even exaggerating). The rate of break ins has only been accelerating. People keep spray painting gang signs on my block which come back after we paint over them within a few weeks.
Tldr; You are all drama queens who care about dumb things that don’t matter. Thank god we are getting a new chief of police so the things that are actually wrong with Capitol Hill can get fixed.
A bloo bloo blooooo.
Uhh, how long have you been on the Hill? Because I have only been here 10 years and to say there are MORE street kids and people with drugs issues in this neighborhood than there were 10 years ago is laughable. Methinks you are the drama queen.
I agree in general, but have noticed an uptick in the number of street people, panhandlers, mentally ill, etc. along Broadway the last few months. Case in point….the group which has “occupied” the NE corner of Broadway and Harrison the last couple of weeks. They hang out there all day, and some nights, with all their crap surrounding them. Unfortunately, that space (between the sidewalk and the south end of the building) is private property, so it is up to the owner/manager to do something about it…but so far that has not happened.
It’s not just Capitol Hill with this problem. All the neighborhoods around Downtown are experiencing an increase in blatant drug use, aggressive panhandling, and robberies. Tourists are refusing to return. Companies won’t book conventions here due to it.
Ugh, a ‘world of beer’? I’d rather die. My loyalty remains with The Pine Box.
I am with the people who say we already have enough places to drink on the hill. Whether you imbibe or not, it’s pretty obvious this is a destination neighborhood for drunken misbehavior. I am very tired of it, and I am also hoping they won’t be loud as I live very nearby.
[…] chain World of Beer opened on Capitol Hill Monday. Some people freaked out, some people ordered a […]
I think it’s good to remember that Pike-Pine is only a relatively small part of Capitol Hill. It’s a trashy, unkempt, and at-times noisy and dangerous place. But the rest of our neighborhood is, for the most part, clean and interesting and gentrifying in a good way…so thank god for that.
As long as the mayhem is confined to Pike-Pine, which is mainly for “nightlife” people, I’m content to spend time and enjoy the rest of Capitol Hill.
I’m having a really hard time following the logic of tearing down a block full of great bars and small businesses, only to replace them with one single crappy chain bar and an overpriced fitness center that doesn’t fit the surrounding neighborhood at all. Granted it’s old news, but it would have been nice to at least see some better businesses make their home on the new 500 E Pine block. I walk by this block every day on my way to work, and it sticks out in all the wrong ways and looks really out of place.
what better business were you planning on opening up before world of beer or rival fitness swooped in and rented these spaces out from under you?
your comment that the block was torn down JUST for the bar and fitness center is laughable in its hyperbole.
Honestly? I’d love to open a business in the neighborhood if I had the proper funds to do so, but that’s really a different issue than what I was talking about in the comment.
To clarify, I wasn’t trying to say that the block was torn down specifically so that those two businesses could move in, but more just acknowledging what actually ended up happening as an outcome in the long run. I have no idea what the competition was like for both Rival Fitness and World of Beer to lease the space that they have now. Do you know? Because if you do, I’d be interested. It would certainly be more constructive for you to offer that information than to be a typical grouchy CHS commenter that doesn’t really add anything to the discussion by simply talking crap about other people’s comments.
“…typical grouchy CHS commenter that doesn’t really add anything to the discussion…”
hello, kettle? this is the pot. you’re black.
Yes laughable. Dan forgot that the whole wonderful block was also torn down for a horrendous monster condo! Silly Dan.
I love beer. Can’t wait to get me some.
People who say this is “no big deal” are either naive, blissfully ignorant of the way gentrification works or big fans of shitty chain restaurants. It’s not just one block: the whole neighborhood has changed a lot. I know change is inevitable but at this point very little of the character that a lot of us really loved about this neighborhood is still around. A lot of people who have been here a long time are getting priced out. The streets are full of gaybashing assholes. A lot of these things are connected. It sucks that change always has to be so all or nothing. And to the people saying that Captiol Hill residents are just drama queen complainers: isn’t one’s neighborhood pretty freaking important? Isn’t your home and your living environment worth caring about?
Yes, there have been a few gay-bashing incidents, but that unfortunately has gone on for a long time. But to say that “the streets are full of gay-bashing assholes” is a bit of an exaggeration, to say the least.
I’ve lived on Capitol Hill, in the same house, for 35 years. In my opinion, the neighborhood is better now. Gentrification is not a dirty word. And there are still plenty of small, local businesses around, if you care to notice.
I’ll go and support World Of Beer just to piss off the Captiol Hill elitists
