January 18th will be the final night for Capitol Hill’s Chop Suey but plans are underway to make sure the address will live on in a new era of E Madison nightlife glory.

UPDATE: The club will host a final show on Monday, January 19th but the big to-do happens the night before.

In a penultimate Sunday farewell, a bill of local all-stars will shut the Suey down:

The venue says goodbye with one final local music hurrah on Sunday, January 18 in the form of an impromptu mini-festival entitled Another One Bites the Dust!. The lineup includes a collection of Seattle’s finest rabblerousers: Tacocat, Kithkin, Chastity Belt, Wimps, Pony Time, Childbirth, Universe People, Deep Creep, Sashay, and more. If that wasn’t enticing enough, it’s a screaming deal at only $5 ($10 at door).

While nothing has been formally announced, CHS has learned the partnership of a Skid Row club owner and a LA musician making plans to purchase the club is set to begin an overhaul to both the interior and the exterior of the 1937-built building at 14th and Madison. A permit was issued for the construction just before Christmas.

Brianna Rettig, the musician in the partnership, declined to comment on the project.

The 2002-born Chop Suey business was on the market for just under $100,000 this summer as the Japanese company that has owned the venue since 2009 decided to bring its investment to an end. With larger live music and performance-focused venues on Capitol Hill on the wane, the end of Chop Suey and its eclectic bookings has added to concerns about the changing culture of the neighborhood. But the Suey’s landlord and building owner Scott Shapiro has said his first hope has been to maintain the 4,900 square-foot building as a music venue. Another Shapiro project, by the way, includes no such promises at this point — the Harvard Exit is slated to open for its final day as a theater on Thursday, January 8th.

No further details of the Chop Suey construction work are yet available but the relatively modest budget listed for the project doesn’t portend a massive overhaul. Music fans can hope whatever comes next for the old Chop Suey won’t take too long to take shape.

UPDATE 1/9/15: More evidence of what comes next appeared Friday morning as a company registered to Rettig has applied for a liquor license for the venue. The application for a “nightclub” level permit has been filed for a corporation created in November. The name of the new club? Chop Suey.
