More stinky fog covering Capitol Hill tonight?

The fog is so moody tonight, it feels like film noir. #seattle #capitolhill #fog #weather #moody #noir

At best, the descriptions sent to CHS about the smell that accompanied the thick fog enveloping Capitol Hill, Seattle, and much of the Puget Sound Tuesday night included eggy descriptions. At worst, the f-word was invoked.

No, that probably wasn’t a fart cloud over Pike/Pine.

But we haven’t — yet — found an explanation for why the heavy fog stank. The National Weather Service hasn’t replied to our sincere inquiry on the matter yet — but they do say prepare for more:

THE UPSHOT IS THAT THE WEAK WINTER SUN WILL NIBBLE AT THE EDGES OF THE FOG TODAY…FOG WILL INCREASE AND POSSIBLY BECOME THICKER TONIGHT AND THURSDAY.

In the meantime, we’ll try to get to the, um, bottom of why this round of fog included its own special stench.

UPDATE: Weather expert Cliff Mass weighs in… and makes us feel a little bit queasy:

The smells of the city… unmixed and concentrated…

Any chance the new Starbucks Reserve roasting plant has added a new essence to our ‘hood? They had to get a certificate from the EPA, so who knows? Or it could be the whole neighborhood is doing a ‘cleanse’ to start the new year out.

Its a phenomenon that has occurred well before the Roastery. Between all the port/Sound traffic, Hwy 99, I-5 and DT core, the DT Seattle area has to have some of the dirtiest air in the region.

Last nights event wasn’t anything new for the area. According to this mornings news, the air at 3000 ft was 58 degrees while it was much cooler on the ground thus trapping in pollutants as noted by Justin. Pierce and Snohomish had issued burn band while I don’t believe King has instituted one just yet.
