  • Boylston armed robbery: A group of suspects described as male and female teenagers — including at least one carrying a pistol — reportedly robbed three people and beat one of their victims late Tuesday night in the 1200 block of Boylston. CHS received a message from one witness to the crime who also provided information to police:
I was witness to an armed robbery at The Manhattan on the corner of Boylston and Seneca. There was a group of approximately 8 people who attacked a group of three people who live in this building as they were outside smoking. I live in The Manhattan and heard the noise, looked outside to the front door of my building from above, and saw the group scattering. The primary victim is a man who was punched and knocked down, getting various bloody scrapes. They attacked from behind and stole his phone. The two women he was with both appeared unharmed. One of them ran, called the cops, and was brought back to the building in the police car. The other called 911 while caring for the primary victim.Police searched the area for the group described only as young black males and females wearing backpacks but the teens had split up before police arrived, according to East Precinct dispatch radio. The group made off with at least one phone and cash in the 10:15 PM hold-up. We’ll update when we learn more from SPD. UPDATE: Police stopped a group around 11:50 PM on Pike near Boylston and were working to identify possible suspects from the robbery. UPDATE x2: SPD took four to five people into custody including at least one juvenile from the group found just before midnight. UPDATE x3: Police say they arrested five teens in the robbery and recovered a “realistic-looking BB gun” —Police arrested several teenage muggers who pistol-whipped, punched and robbed a 25-year-old man in the North First Hill neighborhood Tuesday night. The victim and two women were smoking cigarettes in the 1200 block of Boylston Avenue when a group of five to six boys and one girl approached about 10:20 PM. One of the suspects pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the victim. Then the entire group attacked him, took his cell phone and fled.

The victim suffered minor cuts and abrasions. He declined medical attention. The women with him were unharmed.

Officers spotted a suspicious group in the area and brought in witnesses who identified them as some of the robbers. Police arrested four boys and a girl, and recovered a realistic-looking BB gun.

Two teenage boys were booked into the Youth Services Center on robbery charges. The others were released to adult relatives.

  • Shots fired: Tuesday night, more gunfire was reported on E Union this time in the area around 19th Ave where witnesses reported hearing a dozen or more shots and speeding vehicles just after 9:30 PM. Police swarmed the area and, according to radio dispatches, stopped at least one vehicle but it’s not clear if it was related to the shots. Shell casings were collected from the street in at least two areas nearby. There were no reported injuries and we’re not aware of any reported damage in the area. UPDATE: Waiting for more information from SPD but we know police are investigating separate areas following Tuesday night’s shots including one area around 19th and Union and another near 27th and Spring. We don’t know if this includes areas where shots were fired or just follow-ups on the primary investigation. UPDATE x2: SPD says the Central District incident was part of two “rolling gun battles” Tuesday night:
Police are investigating two rolling gun battles that happened late Tuesday in the 23rd and Union, and Beacon Hill neighborhoods.Witnesses told officers they saw a dark green Chevy Tahoe chasing a light colored SUV through the 23rd and Union neighborhood around 10:30 PM. Passengers in both vehicles were reportedly firing at each other, and officers collected numerous shell casings at the scene.

Roughly 20 minutes later, a North Beacon Hill home was sprayed by gunfire during another rolling gun battle.

Witnesses there reported hearing volleys of gunfire in the 1400 block of South Hill Street and then seeing two, large, four-door vehicles speed away.

A BMW was struck by a bullet, and a home was hit five times. Police collected 15 shell casings.

No one was injured in either shooting. Gang unit detectives are investigating.

Re: Update x2: Looks like we do need the juvenile detention center that so many don’t want to be rebuilt.

And why did the police release some of the suspects to “adult relatives”? Is this just a slap on the wrist? No wonder we have a crime problem. No consequences for your actions.

Releasing them to adult relatives seems altogether futile. Why release them back into the custody of the very people who created the home environment that encouraged/allowed this conduct to begin with? This just doesn’t make sense.

I definitely heard the shots fired at 19th and Union (and I’m all the way over on 15th and Mercer). I knew it was an odd time for fireworks.

This is the first time I’ve heard of that area called “North First Hill Neighborhood” (in the police report). Is this an official name, or one that was just made up on the fly?

I think you might be focusing on the wrong part of the story here.
