911 | Warrant operation in Central District brings SWAT to 27th Ave — UPDATE

Seattle Police and SWAT raided a residence near 27th and Marion Tuesday night as part of a warrant and gang unit operation.

Backed by the King County Sheriff’s Guardian One helicopter above, the operation started around 8 PM. Police discussed some warrant details via radio as the operation was executed. Witnesses said multiple people were removed from the building and handcuffed in the street outside.

SPD has not yet confirmed any arrests and we do not yet know the details of the warrant or warrants being served at the address. There were no injuries reported during the operation. UPDATE: SPD confirmed the warrant operation but a spokesperson said there would be no additional information available tonight. UPDATE 2/25/2015: SPD said they expect to be able to provide more information on the operation later today. UPDATE x2: Police say the raid was the culmination of a two-month investigation. The report details three arrests — one 31-year-old man who police say tried to flee the area, and two women inside the home. Police say they also seized guns and drugs. The full report on the incident is below.

27th Ave has been involved in recent gunfire incidents in the area as police have looked for suspects following a series of street and drive-by shootings and comes amid increased oncerns about crime around 23rd and Union. In the most recent incident, a man was shot in the ankle in the 800 block of 24th Ave S last Thursday.

A two-month long investigation by the SPD Gang Unit and Narcotics detectives led police to arrest three people Tuesday night at a Central District home, where officers found stashes of guns and ammunition in the dining room, bedrooms, and even inside an oven.

Gang Unit, Narcotics, East Precinct Officers, SWAT and FBI served a warrant around 8:15 PM Tuesday at a home on 27th Avenue and East Spring Street. The residence has repeatedly been the site of shootings and a frequent source of reports of gunfire from worried neighbors.  This latest case follows an investigation into members of several Seattle gangs and a series of shootings in the Central District and downtown Seattle.

When police searched the home Tuesday, they found a cache of drugs just inside the front entryway. Detectives also discovered guns stashed in the kitchen, living room, bedrooms, dining room and basement. By the end of the night, police seized five loaded handguns, two rifles, and extended ammunition magazines hidden inside an oven, along with 30 grams of crack cocaine and eight grams of heroin.

While police were serving the warrant at the home, a 31-year-old man sped away from the scene, only to have officers pull him over a few block away. Police found cocaine in his vehicle and booked the man—who is connected with the home—into the King County Jail for drug possession.

Police also arrested a 64-year-old woman at the home for a warrant, along with a 51-year-old woman, also arrested for a warrant, who was later taken to Harborview for a medical condition.

Detectives are still investigating the case and are working with prosecutors.

SFD battles large 16th Ave fire
A two-alarm fire damaged two houses but Seattle Fire was able to get the upper hand on the blaze before it spread and did further damage overnight in the 700 block of 16th Ave.

Heavy smoke spread around the area and reportedly could be seen and smelled a mile away on Capitol Hill. The occupant of the residence where the blaze broke out was safely removed without injury. Seattle Fire also battled a blaze at that home two weeks ago, KIRO reports. A neighboring home was also damaged in this latest fire. SFD has not yet announced a cause or damage estimate for the incident.

UPDATE: Seattle Fire says the blaze was caused by an overheated oil radiator heater.

This is great news. That house has been a very serious problem for years.

I live nearby and these dudes have never done anything to me personally, but since I’ve lived there there have been multiple drive-by-shootings, cars getting lit up and countless run-ins with the police.

I feel for those who need to make a living unlawfully but when I see moms in strollers walking by that house I cringe. The thought of some errant AK spraying up the sidewalk because a 19 year old has an issue with someone in that house…

I saw the police last night and didn’t lose any sleep over it.

I live 5 blocks away so I’m not even affected that much by these folks. That said, what does it say that everyone within a half mile radius is aware of what goes down on 27th and Spring? We know about the silly ‘Seahawks’ car that got a different paint job this summer. We know that they peddle their business at the old post office. It’s just so obvious that it’s surprising to me that it’s taken so long for the police to do anything. However, I’m skeptical of real change unless that house is seized due to the recent investigation. I’m hopeful.

Why is anyone surprised that it took so long for this place to be raided? Until there was huge push to cleanup the drug activity in the neighborhood because of the new construction on 23rd and Union, it didn’t matter to anyone what happened in the neighborhood. It didn’t matter how many times people called in shots fired. It didn’t matter how many times cars were sideswiped by wanna-be gangsters racing by. It didn’t want it all.

Now that 23rd and Union being hyper-developed, it matters.

Hurray for 23rd and Union

If that’s the case, keep the construction coming! Build up, not out, we need to clean this neighborhood up!

First off, I completely understand everyones stand on this situation. However, you don’t know what these young men and women go through. What opputunities are present for them? Is there a program that can help them? Well let me tell you the answer NO. They have families to take care of and there is no one to help or extend a hand. This fake Seattle Police Department arent hear to protect them. So they protect themselves. This is a joke and to every racist person on this post, GOD BLESS YOU!!!!
