- Hate crime task force: Mayor Ed Murray is expected to announce details of a new task force later this week to address anti-LGBTQ hate crimes in Seattle. Earlier this month, city officials and advocates gathered at a Capitol Hill forum to talk about ways to curb bias crimes. This week, a 25-year-old man said he was attacked in Georgetown in a gay bashing.
- E Pike knife arrest: Police confiscated counterfeit money and a knife after a reported altercation near 10th and Pike early last Wednesday morning around 1:15 AM. According to the report on the incident, an employee from a nearby restaurant was trying to return a jacket to a customer when he saw two men in a fight on the street outside. The employee called police to report that one of the men appeared to be brandishing a knife with a four-inch blade and was threatening to kill the other man. Police arrived and found the man matching the suspect description. During a search, they also found what appeared to be poorly-made counterfeit money:
The suspect was booked into King County Jail for investigation of illegal use of a weapon. The fake bills and a knife were taken into evidence. There were no reported injuries. Police are also investigating a reported bias incident related to the arrest but we don’t yet have details on the circumstances of the reported malicious harassment. - Gun found near site homeless tent murder: Police recovered a stolen handgun Wednesday morning from an area near the homeless camp where a woman was shot and killed near 8th and Yesler last weekend. SPD has not yet said whether the weapon could be related to the homicide. A search continues for the killer of the homeless woman who authorities were working to identify.
- 19th Ave death investigated: A person found in a building stairway near 19th and Madison last Wednesday night was believed to have fallen to their death or died of an overdose. Police said wine bottles and drug needles were found near the base of the stairs where the body was discovered just before 7 PM on March 11th. The King County Medical Examiner was investigating to confirm the official cause of death.
- Belmont Ave E shooting death: Police and Seattle Fire rushed to an apartment patio in the 200 block of Belmont Ave E early last Thursday morning after a report that a man had been shot. Police said the 3:30 AM incident turned out to be a suicide and the male victim was deceased at the scene. While suicide is typically not reported by mainstream media, CHS believes it is an important community issue to include in our coverage. - E Madison burglary: Police are investigating a $1,4000+ overnight March 9th burglary of Thudsuan Kitchen and Bar restaurant at 19th and Madison:
Detectives believe the thief was able to access the building by cutting open a keybox on the door of the restaurant. - E Pine car vs. bike: A car vs. bicycle collision injured a rider Wednesday morning on E Pine at Boylston. We’ve asked Seattle Fire for an update on the condition of the rider. Initial reports indicated the injuries were not life threatening and witnesses said the rider appeared to be awake and alert following the crash. One lane of E Pine was briefly closed during the response. We’ll update with any additional information as it becomes available. SPD was investigating the collision.
- 23rd Ave E ‘no-force’ burglary: Police investigated a burglary in which the bad guy apparently walked right in to a residence in the 800 block of 23rd Ave E and stole two televisions. According to the report on the early morning March 13th theft, six people live in the apartment and “the door is always unlocked.” Two were home at the time of the rip-off but said they were asleep and didn’t hear anything. The reporting officer also noted that the residence “has a constant flow of visitors and is very messy.”
