In the spirit of Costco Coffee and Pine/Pike, Vulcan redeveloping Cal Anderson as ‘Entitlement Land’

CBhI8GWUkAAWuUfThere have been a few extra special Capitol Hill April Fool’s sign pranks over the years —

2015 brings a swipe at developer Vulcan and a farcical project for the development giant to redevelop Cal Anderson Park.

While the jokes seem mostly centered on Vulcan’s work in South Lake Union, locals might want to turn their attention to the company’s plans south of Capitol Hill where an executive recently predicted that Yesler Terrace in 10 years “is going to be kind of like South Lake Union.” But we’re not going to see the developer at work anywhere near Cal Anderson. The company had been sniffing around the “transit oriented development” planned around Capitol Hill Station but ultimately decided to leave the projects to others. UPDATE: Here’s another April Fool’s “project” in the neighborhood:

UPDATE x2: Capitol Hill’s own Dan Savage says your posters are funny and all but it’s time to do something more… productive:

So it seems to me… and forgive me for my apostasy… and as much as I’ve enjoyed the various hilarious posters… but it really does seem to me… that some of the energy currently being expended on bitching, moaning, and slapping up “Fuck You, Bros!” posters could be put to better and more constructive use.

The quote about Yesler Terrace becoming the next SLU makes me sick. There is a large East African immigrant population there with several local black-owned restaurants, cafes, and other businesses. I fear that community will be pushed out just as it is starting to thrive. I really hope immigrants who live there are able to keep their homes.

I don’t even know who to send a letter to? Do they only see money and not have the emotional intelligence to see what they are doing to the city?

“”It’s really a multi-cultural community and we want to embrace that and really hold onto that heritage and tradition,” said Healey, who thinks a many people will find the racial and economic diversity of Yesler Terrace appealing enough to move to the new neighborhood.”

It is already that community. Stop marketing away our lives.

It’s not a planning for Amazon but a community for Google and startups is what I’ve been hearing. A campus of startups.

Yesler Terrace will provide more affordable housing under the redevelopment plan but it will be mixed with market rate housing. This is much better as it doesn’t make it an exclusive neighborhood (high crime) but makes it a place for everyone. But again, nobody will be displaced as they will increase the amount of affordable housing, not decrease it. Just look up the city’s plans. It will not really be like SLU.

Thanks for setting the record straight, Anton. Many of those low-income people who have been temporarily displaced from Yesler Terrace will be returning there once the construction is complete, and they will have much nicer homes.

The models for this kind of development are Holly Park and Rainer Vista in south Seattle….they are MUCH nicer neighborhoods now, and the same thing will happen at Yesler Terrace.

If Mr. Savage really feels that way he might want to communicate it to the writing staff at the Stranger.

Or, you know, offer some brilliant suggestions as to just what we’re supposed to be doing that’s more constructive. City Hall isn’t really listening, and the developers don’t care. Please, Dan, enlighten us as to what we should be doing instead of finding some humor in the situation?

Show up at a design review and provide comments on the building’s architecture. You’d be surprised to see that, for example, young people are largely missing from such reviews, even if they are the largest population in the neighborhood where a building is proposed.

If Dan Savage said it, then it must be true.
