• Burglary spike: Capitol Hill burglary reports are off the charts and SPD officials are pointing to a surge in parking garage break-ins. According to SPD data compiled by CHS, May and June of this year saw a close to 8% rise in reported burglaries across the East Precinct — but a surge in July has pushed concerns higher along with the crime trend. At its recent pace, July was on track for nearly 100 reported break-ins — the highest total we’ve tallied in the last two years:

  Community outreach efforts from the department are warning apartment and condo dwellers around Capitol Hill and First Hill to beware car prowlers:You can see where the burglaries have been concentrated. Here’s a “heat map” of reports around the East Precinct since May 1st:

• Hungry burglar: This account of a North Capitol Hill break-in has the Stranger speculating about an “open window” burglary surge. We think it’s more a reminder of just how random some break-ins can be:
  Looked around the whole house and didn’t find anyone or see anything missing – there was even money right on the kitchen counter where he/she/they would have walked right past. (There were several good bottles of booze in plain sight too—I had just recently done a distillery run.) Nothing was disturbed—the only other things we noticed were that the phone charger had been taken from the kitchen and plugged in in the living room—they had unplugged that fan to plug in the charger, and they ate a fudgecicle and put the stick and wrapper in the trash can along with another fruit roll-up wrapper (brand new bag was otherwise empty). Three dogs in the house and nobody reacted! Came in through the window and stayed for a while, had a snack, charged their phone, left the same way they came in and even put the screen back! The brownie box they left behind still had four brownies in it :) (The fudgecicle and the raspberries were ours, the fruit roll ups and brownies were theirs.)
• Vase burglar: Speaking of random, this burglary suspect decided an apartment lobby vase would be his big haul in this July 5th break-in on Bellevue Ave E:
• First Hill construction burglar: With the surge of construction ongoing in the area, another kind of burglary also continues to plague the East Precinct. This July 11th break-in netted $1,200 in tools and damaged a First Hill construction site on Seneca:
• Gucci thief: Police are investigating a July 10th early evening ripoff at a shop in the 600 block of E Pike as a robbery after the suspect tried to forcefully steal a fancy pair of sunglasses while apparently making off with a fancy belt:
• S Jackson armed robbery: A man was held up and beaten in a gunpoint robbery reported in a park near 23rd and Jackson in a July 12th incident reported around 6:30 PM:
• 4th gunshots: Police were called to a report of shots fired in an incident on the 4th of July in which a man said he fired into the air after being struck by a driver when he told the woman he didn’t want any disturbances in front of his family as they lit fireworks near 16th and Union. Here is one witness account of the incident from the SPD report:Officers found two shell casings at the scene. Police say the man had a permit for the weapon. There were no arrests.
• Fake ID assault: A bouncer at a club in the 1000 block of E Pike was pepper sprayed early Saturday morning, July 11th after calling out a female for her fake ID:Police were not able to locate the suspects but took the fake ID with a clear picture of the female involved in the incident into evidence.
• Pike/Pine fight arrests: Two male suspects were arrested after a reported brawl at the Shell service station at Pike and Broadway around 3 AM on Saturday, July 11:
  The suspects were spotted returning to the area and contacted by police:The brothers were taken into custody and booked into King County Jail.
