UPDATE: SPD announced that the victim has died:

Detectives have released more information into last night’s shooting in the 2600 block of E. Columbia St.
Detectives believe the victim was walking his dog, a black and tan shepherd mix, when he was shot around 7:30 p.m. Neighbors heard the shots and called 911. Officers arrived in one minute and attempted life-saving measures before Medics transported the victim to Harborview Medical Center. Doctors declared the victim dead shortly after his arrival at the hospital.

Detectives are asking anyone with information to please call the Homicide Tip Line at (206)233-5000.

UPDATE 8/18/2015 10:52 AM: The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Antonio Jones.

Original report: A 24-year-old man suffering from life threatening gun shot wounds at 26th and Columbia was taken to Harborview Medical Center Thursday evening, according to Seattle Police.

Medics responded to the area just after 7:30 PM to treat the victim.

Police were searching the area for a vehicle witnesses reported seeing leaving the scene.

SPD spokesperson Lauren Lovanhill had no details on a possible motive or if the shooting was gang related late Thursday.

No comments? I remember the good ole days when people used to post their account of the incident on here.

This is tragic. My heart sank when I read that the victim died. There have been so many shootings in a one to two mile radius around this area in the past several years. There’s always a predictable spike around summer, and other shootings throughout the year. I have begun to avoid certain streets at certain times of day, and sadly many of these streets are where children play or where people walk their dogs (as was the case this time.)

I do miss the CD News, which seemed to attract more CD residents than this blog, leading to more comments (as the above comment mentions.) I hope that the neighborhood can rally together to keep people out of the gangs that seem to be behind most of these shootings, although we’re not yet sure who was responsible for this one. CHS, please keep us posted if there is a vigil. Also, thank you for continuing to report on our neighborhood at a time when most of the rest of the city has forgotten about us.

I would like the police to share the details with the public.
– What is the description of the vehicle?
– Is there a description of the suspect(s)?
– What makes them think this is gang related?

Later, if it is determined the suspect has been previously convicted of violent crime, or several violent crimes, I’d like to see the court held accountable for failing to protect us. The police can only do so much when the bad guys are back on the street over and over again.

I agree. I read that a lot of the shootings recently have been traced back to one or two specific guns. Often crimes in the same area are linked to just a handful of people. The whole neighborhood community wants the criminals caught, but it seems like the city isn’t really paying attention. I hope everyone who runs for D3 council position acknowledges the crime in this area with plans to do something about it.

according to the police scanner last night (I switched on after the 8th cop car went flying down cherry) the vehicle of interest at that time was an old white sedan. I didn’t glean much else from when I tuned in. sounded like the kid was unresponsive when they arrived based off the repeat CPR at the scene they kept broadcasting. They gave details of number of gunshots and where wounds were but not much else.

For future reference, you can tune into KOMO’s police scanner accessible by website or through your smart phone if you’re interested in what the sirens are about. It’s a little cryptic with codes, but you can usually get a high-level idea of what’s going on. I turn it on when it sounds like something is going on nearby in case they’re still looking for persons of interests or vehicles on the off-chance that we notice something near our house.

I agree. Where can we get more information about these gangs? Are there certain colors/defining items they wear? Is it a turf war? I read somewhere someone mention “somali gangs”. Is there any truth to this ethnic label?
Can we get a car description?
I realize these may naive questions… just not sure where to start. It does seem more info on what to look for might be helpful in identifying some of these folks.

Was the victim targeted or was this a random killing? Or stray bullet? I know either way it’s sad and a tragedy. I’m sick of the guns and shootings.

Now if its anything I’ve learned from the numerous times this has happened before in our neighborhood its tough to get the real story. But for what its worth.

I didn’t see what happened but was on the scene a few minutes after it happened and talked to the neighbor that lived right across the street. The description the SPD provided in the media didn’t match what she said. She described a heated argument between a group of people and then a person in a vehicle then shooting the victim. She also said that after the car sped away two people ran to the victim took something off of him and then jumped into a truck(suv?) and drove off.

We need to do something to get guns off our streets! I know that Mayor Murray is all wound up about the hookah bars right now, and that’s an issue we need to take seriously, but the meta-issue here is guns. Without guns, the violent arguments and altercations result in fisticuffs or knife fights. Both are potentially deadly, but not nearly so much as a bullet.

I think we should ban ammunition sales within the Seattle city limits and institute another gun buyback program, this time with enough funding to get many more weapons out of circulation.

I know several families who are raising their children within blocks of this location. These precious babies don’t need to grow up with this kind of horror all around them. We have to act.

Yes, gun violence is horrible, but banning ammunition sales from the 2 stores in Seattle that sell it will stop nothing. Do you really think the weapons and ammunition used in these situations is acquired legally? And suggesting knife fights as a better alternative is plain crazy. Have you seen the aftermath of a knife fight? It’s just plain gruesome.

This is another terrible incident. I walk through this intersection every day on my way to work, and the people who live in the neighborhood are very nice. Any of them could have been harmed or killed. This is one block from the very expensive new “Neighborhood Greenway” that the city installed as an effort to get more people biking through the neighborhood. The police and city leadership need to get on the issue of gangs and violence, but I don’t have high hopes.
