Seattle City Council adopts resolution rejecting Islamophobia

As the investigation continues into the death of a 16-year-old Somali student on Capitol Hill, there is fear around Seattle’s Muslim communities that the incident may have been the result of a racially or religiously motivated attack. In response to anti-Muslim sentiments and searches on the rise nationally, Seattle City Council members Monday approved a resolution staunchly rejecting Islamophobia.

The resolution, introduced by Council president Tim Burgess, asks residents and city officials to make extra efforts to ensure the safety of their Muslim neighbors.

“The City of Seattle welcomes and affirms our Muslim residents, both native born and immigrant, and recognizes the enormous value they add to the cultural and economic life of this city,” Burgess said in a statement. “When we respond from fear, we respond from weakness.”

Prior to the resolution vote, future District 3 representative Kshama Sawant wrote about the Capitol Hill death and the anti-Muslim rhetoric of presidential candidate Donald Trump. “Politicians are exploiting the fear that people have in the wake of terror attacks with an onslaught of racist and Islamophobic proposals,” she said.

Seattle Central College student Hamza Warsame died on December 5th in a 60-foot fall from a building near Summit and Thomas. The cause and manner of Warsame’s death are still under investigation, according to Seattle Police.

Dozens of Seattle Central students, members of the Somali community, and their supporters held a prayer vigil for Warsame last week while rallies and marches outside SPD’s East Precinct brought demands that police investigate the case as a potential hate crime.

The full resolution is included below:

A RESOLUTION declaring support for Muslim communities, affirming the religious pluralism of the United States, and urging Seattle residents to stand together for peace and understanding.

WHEREAS, Muslims are part of our society and, inspired by their faith, give back every day as U.S. military personnel, police officers, doctors, nurses, caregivers, teachers, and in many other roles contributing to the success of the United States of America and the City of Seattle; and

WHEREAS, our nation’s founding documents emphasize the freedom of religion and a society that embraces religious pluralism; and

WHEREAS, The City of Seattle values the many different cultures, religions and traditions our residents embrace; and

WHEREAS, The City of Seattle continues to work toward a more inclusive society and welcomes cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity; and

WHEREAS, Muslims, both native born and immigrant, represent an increasingly important thread in the tapestry of American society; and

WHEREAS, the Muslim population in Washington State is estimated to be approximately 100,000 people, many thousands of whom live in Seattle, and who share the same American values and freedoms that we all cherish; and

WHEREAS, a significant percentage of Seattle’s immigrants and refugees are Muslim and have come to Seattle seeking a safe place to work, study or raise a family; and

WHEREAS, throughout history the United States has welcomed wave after wave of immigrants and refugees who add enormous value to the economic and cultural life of our nation; and

WHEREAS, presently, anti-Muslim rhetoric has increased in the national discourse and rates of hate violence targeting Muslim families and children are at record highs across our nation, which is detrimental to all people who cherish freedom and liberty; and

WHEREAS, some of the darkest moments in our nation and our city’s history have emerged from similar climates of fear; and

WHEREAS, this fear-based rhetoric distorts the reality of terrorism in the United States, where more individuals have been killed since September 11, 2001 by those who espouse other extremist ideologies like white supremacy or antigovernment fanatics than by those who espouse a perverted form of Islam; and

WHEREAS, hateful rhetoric only enables extremist ideologies to flourish in the dark corners of global society; and

WHEREAS, The City of Seattle finds this anti-Muslim rhetoric and hate violence to be against American principles of religious freedom and fairness and contrary to the vision we hold as a nation that welcomes all people; and

WHEREAS, all of Seattle’s residents deserve to live in a safe environment free of hate and discrimination; and

WHEREAS, The City of Seattle wishes to extend the traditional Islamic greeting of “Peace be upon you” to all of its Muslim residents and visitors; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE, THE MAYOR CONCURRING, THAT:

Section 1. The City of Seattle does not tolerate anti-Muslim hate speech and violent acts committed against those who are Muslim or perceived as being Muslim, their places of worship, businesses, schools, and community centers. These are in direct contradiction to values of The City of Seattle and our open American way of life. We encourage our residents to recognize and celebrate the cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity that is represented in our City. We encourage residents to take extra efforts to ensure the safety of their Muslim neighbors. We encourage all City departments to direct appropriate attention and resources to supporting those targeted by hate speech and hate crimes.

Interesting stuff, I would like to know the data that supports this claim though “WHEREAS, this fear-based rhetoric distorts the reality of terrorism in the United States, where more individuals have been killed since September 11, 2001 by those who espouse other extremist ideologies like white supremacy or antigovernment fanatics than by those who espouse a perverted form of Islam;”

According to the US State Department, between 2001 – 2013, the number of US citizens killed was 3,030. This includes the ‘other extremist ideologies’. In the same period, the number of US citizens killed by gun violence was 404,496.

I’m pretty sure that self-inflicted gun deaths are included in these tallies. Not to minimize gun violence at all, just sayin.’

The City Council is a do nothing clown show. Islamophobia, a term coined by the Muslim Brotherhood, literally means the irrational fear of Islam. However, it is the Regressive Left with the irrational fear of free speech and criticism of conservative religious doctrines of Islam.

This is nice gesture and all… but can we get back to city business? I believe we already have anti-discrimination laws that prohibit discrimination by religion. I suppose there might have been one person wondering where the city of Seattle stands on this subject.

Agreed.

So, the way it works is this. You criticize Israel, you’re anti-Semitic. You criticize Islam, you’re Islamophobic. You criticize Christianity, you’re denying people religious freedom.

I dream of a day when people stop using fairy tales to shape their reality. Religion is all bunk and hokum, and no amount of left-wing hand wringing and right-wing ginned up outrage will alter the physics, chemistry, and biology that actually govern reality.

What if I went up to you and declared a head of lettuce to be the One and Supreme God…and then you elected not to hire me? Is that discrimination? No it isn’t…because I haven’t penned a Holy Book yet. I better get on that.

I fail to understand why our elected officials have decided to spend taxpayer money (via the use of their time for which we are paying) on a “declaration” that is common sense for any decent person and amounts to little more than a condescending and patronizing statement couched in legal language. I can only assume that these same officials are attempting to garner favorable publicity for themselves with this document while reminding us to be politically correct. We already have legislation regarding hate crimes and harassment so, this can only have been composed in order to impress their constituents. Oops. I guess I’m supposed to be impressed.

CNN notwithstanding, suicide and accidents are not “gun violence” by any usual definition of “violence”.

https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2010/crime-in-the-u.s.-2010/tables/10shrtbl08.xls

Murder by firearms by year, 2006-2010:

10,225 10,129 9,528 9,199 8,775

Average over these years: 9571.2. Let’s make it easy and say 10,000 per year, from 2001-2013, so ~130,000 American deaths by “Gun Violence”. Not 400,000.

Now note that in the limited studies available, big city murder victims (who constitute the majority of murder-by-firearm victims) were very likely (60-90%) to have a felony conviction on their record. In other words, a large chunk of the numbers above were criminals being killed by other criminals in the course of habitual criminal activity.

Any level of unjustifiable homicide by any method is a tragedy, but privately owned firearms are used to prevent injury and crime far more often than they are used for harm. They are overwhelmingly a benefit for the weakest and most vulnerable in society and serve to deter untold, immeasurable, but undoubtedly significant amounts of crime from being attempted in the first place. (Polls of felons in prisons revealed that most fear an armed victim and they change their behavior based on that calculation. They prefer unarmed victims.)

Those who irrationally fear guns would take away the ability of the weakest, the most vulnerable and the most law-abiding segments of our society to defend themselves against violence and victimization, in order to prevent what actually amounts to a surprisingly small – though nonetheless tragic – number of deaths of innocent victims. That they continually inflate the statistics they present (accidents as “gun violence”, 19-year-old gang members as “children killed by guns”, pellet gun assaults counted as “mass shootings”, naming a terrorist shot by police as a victim of “gun violence” etc.) should suggest to an honest observer the weakness of their case. If the numbers were on their side, they wouldn’t have to lie.

So, you’re saying, the 270,000 people who died by accidental shootings and suicides shouldn’t be counted in understanding the harm done by firearms, because, well, these shooting deaths don’t count.

And you’re saying, without the slightest bit of evidence to support it, that the number of crimes stopped by firearms are greater than the number of crimes perpetrated by firearms. You might believe this, but there’s no evidence to support it.

Then you say, the majority of those shot have been convicted of a felony — based on some limited study, which of course, you don’t identify. Next breath you’re saying that convicted felons “change their behavior” when interacting with someone who has a gun, suggesting that having guns deters crime. Oh, is it both ways, convicted felons stay away from people with guns but get killed by guns more often?

What garbage! The USA has horrible rates of gun related deaths, and that’s a result of our absurd paranoia of even minimal gun control. Congress even gives people on the terrorist watch list the right to have guns. Assault weapons? No restrictions. Laws based on fear and hatred. We sow the wind and reap the whirlwind.

First off,the Terrorist Watch list is a joke.People who have a name similar to someone on the list are denied to fly. What do you call a assault rifle?I own a 22 rifle.I could take it to a gunsmith and have all the nasty stuff put on it.But it would still be just a 22 rifle. It would hurt NO better than before

The worst city council in the country does it again. I just reported a pothole at 15th and Prospect I have reported 7 previous times, in 4 years. That is probably more than any Islamophobic incidents in Seattle.

There is more anti-Semitism in Seattle than Islamaphobia and ironically it is Muslims and BLM folks behind most of it. The shooting at the Jewish Center, the attack on Bernie Sanders which was organized by a Muslim are carried out by 2 black girls, and the harassment of a local Jewish business owner and resident on Capitol Hill by the nearby black church and a recent BLM mob who stood in front of his business making anti-Semetic comments and threatening him for tearing down the flyers for black hate groups off his property. I don’t think the city council condemned these crimes and in fact voiced support for BLM. This kind of liberalism drives people into the arms of the right.
