Man charged with vehicular homicide in First Hill crash

A 27-year-old man faces charges of vehicular homicide and reckless driving following last week’s early Wednesday morning DUI crash at Boren and James on First Hill.

61-year-old Gibrel Mohammed was killed instantly, police say, when his Prius was slammed into by a car driven by Chase Washatko in a collision caught on video by an ambulance also involved in the crash. Washatko’s, police say, had just been spotted driving erratically by passing traffic in 12th Ave’s two-way turn lane. An SPD officer had turned to being pursuing the suspect with lights flashing when the collision occurred a few blocks away:

According to prosecutors, Washatko attempted to flee the scene following the crash:

Police say Washatko said he had been drinking at 13 Coins on Denny and had gotten lost trying to drive to his mother’s home in Gig Harbor. Police say his blood alcohol level tested at 0.20% following the crash — well above the state’s 0.08% threshold.

CHS has been told the 61-year-old Mohammed worked at Ballard High School.

Prosecutors say Washatko had moved to Gig Harbor from Wisconsin about two months ago and has a limited criminal history. He is currently held in King County Jail on $750,000 bail.

Meanwhile, the driver who rear-ended a Metro bus in this March 8th crash on Broadway has not yet been charged with a crime. SPD said that police found signs of impairment and that the car’s driver would be booked into King County Jail upon release from the hospital.

.20% BAC, speeding on James St and running a red light.

This guy will definitely serve time and deserve it for killing someone with his stupidity.
