Capitol Hill Pets | Jude the rescue dog at Fire Station 25

IMG_2451Most of the friends we have made learning about Capitol Hill Pets have been off the clock and taking it easy. Jude is the first working dog we’ve met. He is also a bit of a Hillebrity at Fire Station 25 on E Pine. Jude is a five-year-old Golden Retriever who works as a rescue dog for Seattle Fire, FEMA, and the Northwest Disaster Search Dogs. His partner Tyler Woods brings Jude to the firehouse whenever he is on shift. But Jude is also ready to leap into action if ever tragedy strikes and he is called. He is trained to help first responders like Woods find victims and navigate piles of rubble and debris. Jude also has an impressive family. Jude’s mother was a prizewinning show dog in Canada, Woods says,
and Jude’s father works in ski patrol search and rescue.

Every day is training for a rescue dog like Jude. “They’re just like little kids. The more you expose him to, the less stuff freaks him out,” Woods says.

We ask photographer Alex Garland to follow marchers in the rain and do crazy things like trying to make yet another picture of yet another huge apartment building look interesting. We thought we’d ask him to do something a little more fun. Capitol Hill Pets is a semi-regular look at our furry, fuzzy, feathered, and finned friends found out and about on Capitol Hill. I wonder if Jude and his father ever get together for shop talk, seeing as they’re in the same business.
