Literary nonprofit Hugo House has announced the lineup for this 2016-2017 season, its first full season in an interim stay on First Hill.

I’m so happy to announce Hugo House’s 2016–2017 season, which features a diverse lineup of established and emerging writers throughout our two series—Hugo Literary Series and Word Works—as well as our one-off events. We’re thrilled to welcome Mary Gaitskill, Téa Obreht, Colson Whitehead, Karen Russell, Terrance Hayes, Patricia Smith, Alexander Chee, and many more.

Some of the best news in the announcement will come for Capitol Hill fans of the nonprofit’s popular Lit Series:

While Hugo House is in their interim space, they’re excited to bring this season’s Lit Series to Fred Wildlife Refuge, a collaborative venue for performing arts on Capitol Hill whose management generously agreed to partner with Hugo House for the upcoming season.

Téa Obreht, Alexander Chee, Angela Flournoy, and Anis Mojgani are on the Lit Series 16/17 roster.

Fred Wildlife will also pitch in for some of the Hugo “one off” events like a celebration of Wave Books scheduled for September. Other “one off” venues will include the downtown Seattle Public Library.

Hugo’s interim First Hill HQ will host the Word Works series of “writing-centric craft talks. The coming season’s lineup includes “best-selling young adult novelist E. Lockhart; Northwest novelist and nonfiction writer Lidia Yuknavitch; Guggenheim fellow, poet and writer Patricia Smith; acclaimed fiction writer Mary Gaitskill; National Book Award-winning poet Terrance Hayes; and MacArthur genius and finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction Karen Russell.”

Hugo’s fall class schedule has also been posted.

Construction, meanwhile, is underway at the site of the old Hugo House on 11th Ave across from Cal Anderson following the June demolition of the organization’s longtime home. In 2018, Hugo House is slated to return to Capitol Hill in a new 10,000 square-foot writing center on the ground floor of the six-story apartment building under construction at the site.
