Seattle Fire battled a blaze in the first floor of the Crest Apartments in the 1700 block of Melrose Ave Tuesday night.

Smoke was reported throughout the building just after 8:20 PM.

Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control and were working to search the building and begin the cleanup process.

We do not know of any reported injuries.

UPDATE: Seattle Fire reports that pets were rescued during the response. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental but no further information about what started the blaze was available, according to a SFD spokesperson. Damage was estimated to be $70,000 including $60,000 of damage to the building.

UPDATE 8/18/2016: A friend has let us know about this effort to raise donations for victims of the Crest fire:

On tuesday Aug 16th Greg and Joe moved in to their new apartment on Capitol Hill. That evening they left to go buy a new shower curtain for their new place and were only gone for 20 mins, when they returned they found their new home in flames. Their dogs Gus and Jake were rescued out of the fire, but they are in very critical condition at the animal hospital. Their cat was rescued as well, she was already released from the vet and is doing well. Greg and Joe lost everything they owned in this devastating fire and need our help! Currently they are staying with Greg’s mom in Bellingham until they can figure out whats next. The vet bills are racking up and the outcome of Gus and Jake is still unknown at this time. They are being transported to a vet hospital up north in attempt to save their lives. Any contribution to help Greg and Joe in this very trying time is GREATLY appreciated. I will post updates as i get them. The funds will be going towards helping save Gus and Jake’s lives, and also the costs to start over from scracth with a home.
