If you have been eagerly waiting for work to start on the final section of Summit Slope Park, don’t get too excited by the arrival of work crews this week.
While the “East John Street Open Space Development” is seven years in the making, there is still some work to be done before the final piece of the park comes to fruition. Before the street is ripped up to extend the park into part of E John in January 2017, Seattle City Light is taking advantage of the timing by installing a new duct bank for electrical wiring and electrical vaults along the park.

Pedestrian and vehicle traffic restrictions will be in effect around the park through November. Work hours will be Mondays through Fridays, 9 AM to 3 PM and Saturdays from 8 AM to 4 PM.
Powered by $260,000 from a parks levy grant, the plan to extend the 2011-built park into E John between Olive and Summit entered its final planning phase in 2013. Plans call for trees and turf patches to be installed along an extended sidewalk that will cut into half of the block. Vehicle traffic will remain open, but parking in front of the park will be removed. Parks officials say the project will go out to bid in November and is expected to be complete by June 2017.
“It’s quite the process to go through to work within the street right-of-way,” said parks project coordinator Toby Ressler.”These things take time to complete.”
This is a welcome project, but it’s a little ridiculous that it is taking so long.
