Friends raising funds to help after minivan crash destroys 23rd Ave apartment

Imagine coming home to your apartment looking like a minivan crashed into it… because a minivan did. Central District resident Stephen Nocentelli arrived at the 23rd Ave building he calls home to find news crews and a scene of vehicular carnage after getting a call from police following last Wednesday night’s crash. The driver and the occupant of the ill-fated Dodge fled the scene.

Nocentelli documented the destruction on a page set up to help him raise funds to replace his damaged belongings and find a new place to live:

The truck caused over $35,000 worth of damage to the building, and caused me to lose over $5,000 worth of personal belongings. It will be several months before repairs are done, and the apartment is livable again. I do not think I will be moving back in.”

Nocentelli was lucky he had to work late that night. The vehicle “made it all the way into the living room and bathroom,” leaving a trail of destruction behind. According to the page,  Nocentelli does not have renters insurance meaning he’ll likely need to pursue a lawsuit over the incident. Friends and loved ones are hoping to raise $8,000 to help out. SPD has not announced any arrests related to the case.

Who doesn’t have renter’s insurance? 5K would easily be covered, plus pay for a place to live while this one is being fixed, for about $100 per year.

for real with this?

I agree, but I think it is a sobering reminder of the need to be carrying renter’s insurance.

Won’t be a problem if it happens to him — he has renter’s insurance!
