Central Co-op, Bartell Drugs, Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream and Chaco Canyon Organic Cafe were assessed by stringent sustainability criteria and a public vote to be honored with a 2016 Heart of Seattle Award. The winners were announced at the Heart of Seattle Awards Party presented by the Seattle Good Business Network in partnership with Chinook Book at the Fremont Foundry on January 12th, 2017.

Each finalist was chosen based on high scores from the comprehensive B Corp Quick Assessment Criteria which awards points based on strong social and environmental priorities, ethical business practices, happy employees and enthusiastic customers. The winners were decided by public vote.

ABOUT THE WINNERS

Central Co-Op. Founded in 1978, Central Co-op is an independent and democratically governed natural food co-op owned 50/50 by workers and consumers. Central Co-op demonstrates its commitment to people and the environment through high wages and benefits, a high standard of local, sustainable, and ethical sourcing, and deep community engagement, with 14% percent of profits donated to partners last year.

Bartell Drugs. Nothing says “local” more than 125 years of doing business in Seattle. And they do so in a connected way by engaging the community and making a commitment to sourcing local and sustainable products.

Molly Moon Homeade Ice Cream Parlor. It’s hard to believe Molly Moon’s has only been around since 2008. The beloved ice cream has become a community staple, known as much for owner Molly Moon Neitzel’s commitment to positive business practices as it is for its heralded farm-to-kitchen ice cream.

Chaco Canyon Organic Cafe. Chaco Canyon Organic Cafe sources the best sustainably produced, organic, and local ingredients available and makes everything to order from scratch. Their vegan menu focuses on nutrient-dense dishes and strives to meet many dietary needs while satisfying any omnivore’s appetite. As part of their commitment to people, they seek to keep costs accessible – including the awesome Community Bowl – and donate to local and national causes that share their values.
