Eighteen-month-old Ritual House of Yoga had pretty much outgrown its space on 19th Ave E in the former Little Theatre shortly after opening.

“We had great success from the very beginning,” owner Sarah Pohl told CHS.

Students filled classes and workshops from the start and the community spoke loud and clear that they were ready to expand, so Sarah and her husband and business partner Stuart Pohl responded, telling their landlord to let them know if anything else comes available in the area. The multi-style yoga studio now plans to expand to the retail space two doors down, sandwiching Fuel Coffee in the middle.

Much of that success is because of Ritual House’s teachers, Pohl said.

“We’re stronger than we’ve ever been, and I just feel really really lucky to get to work with them,” Pohl said. “It’s just been a joy to run this business.”

When the space on the other side of Fuel Coffee opened up when longtime tenant Moonjar moved off the Hill, Pohl decided to go for it.

“I’m notorious for biting off more than I can chew,” Pohl said.

The Pohls met with their architects to finalize plans last week and hope to open early this summer.

The additional space will primarily be used for weekend workshops and rentals by traveling yoga teachers, but the Pohls do plan to add a few more classes — maybe seven to 10 per week. Ritual currently offers four to six classes daily that range from vinyasa, forrest hatha, jivamukti vinyasa, hatha and restorative, among others. Its teacher roster lists 21 instructors. Morning classes average eight to 15 students and evening classes see about 25 to 40 people.

While the studio has been successful, Pohl said they don’t want to open Ritual House studios throughout the city.

“This is a good opportunity to grown organically where we are,” she said.

Having two different entrances on either side of a coffee shop isn’t ideal, Pohl said, but there will be a check-in desk at both locations and they will make sure signage directs students where to go.

The new space will be narrower, but deeper than Ritual House’s current space and will use similar materials and designs to look like Ritual House No. 1. It will also have its own bathrooms, water filter, and tea station.
