  • Comet assault: A man told police he was beaten at the Comet Monday night in an altercation with a group of patrons who were yelling “‘faggot’ at the television when President Donald Trump was being shown.” SPD’s bias division is reviewing the case. According to the SPD report on the incident, the victim told police he was paying his tab at the Comet around 7 PM when he decided to intervene and tell the yelling group that using that word “in a public place out loud was not appropriate and that they should stop.” “The primary suspect then turned around and punched V/1 in the face with a closed fist. The five other suspects listed above then jumped on V/1, forcing him to the ground,” the report notes. The melee continued out of the bar and onto the sidewalk where the group of six continued to beat and chase the two victim and his acquaintance. Police say the Comet bartender could not provide many details but confirmed one patron “had been kicked out of the bar and was causing a disturbance with other customers but he did not see a fight or anyone being assaulted.” SPD reports that injuries suffered by the victims in the attack were minor. A friend of the victim who reported the incident to CHS tells said his friend suffered a broken nose and a concussion. SPD is investigating.
  • ‘Armed’ beer shoplift suspect: An intoxicated bandit caused a major scene Saturday night just before midnight at a gas station quick mart in the 400 block of 12th Ave. According to East Precinct radio dispatches, officers were called after reports of a standoff outside the store between a manager armed with a baseball bat and a suspected shoplifter who claimed to be armed with a gun. Police found the suspect leaning against a gas pump and took him into custody for reportedly shoplifting beer from the store. No gun was recovered at the scene. Seattle Fire was called when the suspect claimed to have suffered a broken arm in the incident.
  • Broadway ‘carjacking’: Saturday night into Sunday morning also featured a peculiar auto theft and crash. Police were investigating a reported carjacking at the Harvard Market at Broadway and Pike when a car crashed near Boylston and Howell and two occupants were seen running from the area. The victim’s story changed when he told police he had actually left two “old friends” in the car while he got out to urinate and they had driven off without him. Police were unable to find the suspects. The man was reunited with his car and told it was his responsibility to get it towed.
  • Tobacco store break-in: A 911 caller told police she saw a man step out of the broken glass of Pike Tobacco early Sunday morning and walk off after apparently burglarizing the 600 block E Pike shop. Police arrived to find the glass door smashed in and searched the shop but found the burglar was long gone in the 4 AM heist.
  • First Hill death: Police say the King Count Medical Examiner is investigating the death of a man in a First Hill parking lot. A 911 caller reported that a person at the scene was attempting CPR on a man found unconscious in the Boylston parking lot just north of Madison just after 9:30 Monday morning. The man was dead by the time Seattle Fire arrived a few minutes later. The area where the man was found includes a sheltered area often used by homeless people and drug users to get out of the weather. A spokesperson says police found no signs of foul play or drug paraphernalia at the scene.

You have no idea who the perpetrators are. Unfortunately, hatred isn’t necessarily some imported thing just tied to money. These could be long-time locals. And I don’t see it as acceptable. This is also a bar that has a “no homophobes” sign on the door (among other requests on the sign) last I saw, so what are they actually doing to enforce this? Why didn’t they step in? Why weren’t they paying attention to the use of a sexual orientation word as a slur?

Well, many tech employees do tend to come ‘from off’ – and some of those countries aren’t exactly bastions of progressive thought when it comes to sexuality, etc. So, Max, there’s a chance it could very well be imported – if not from elsewhere in the U.S.

Your presumption that a person misusing the word “faggot” works in tech and comes from another country is both misguided and unsupported by the evidence in this case.

Does Hate City still hang out there. Wouldn’t be surprised if they were responsible and they are definitely not Tech Bros. They’ve been on the hill for along time.

RE: the Comet altercation……way too much alcohol and way too much testosterone. Donald Trump may be many things but he is surely not a “faggot.”

Alcohol is no defense. Anyone who would use a sexual orientation word as a slur would do the same when sober, just not as loudly and unabashedly. Also, it’s not about Trump at all, but them calling out their dislike of him by associating him with that sexual orientation word. And what was their intent with that? I bet if asked of course they would not say they were calling him gay, but some variation of weak, awful, gross, creepy. And the word for the that sums that up is that sexual orientation word. I don’t think we’re disagreeing here. I just want to keep the issue focused on the perpetrators, not Trump.

Exactly…and to add to that: while I applaud their disdain for The TrumpHole, it doesn’t give them a free pass to homophobia. Or anything else similarly bigoted.

Maybe Comet Tavern should update that big sign right next to their door. You know, the one that says no homophobes, no sexism, etc…..It’s just for show.
