Apartment dweller hit by drive-by bullet inside his Capitol Hill building

Seattle Police have released new details in what appears to have been a freak drive-by shooting incident on Capitol Hill early Sunday in which a man was hit by a bullet after hearing gunfire outside his E Denny Way apartment building

CHS reported on the incident over the Presidents Day weekend but SPD has now released its report on the strange shooting and the apartment dweller’s unlucky brush with a bullet.

As we previously reported, the victim told police he heard gunfire in the street below his apartment just after 1 AM and went to the window to see what was happening. As he turned, a bullet smashed through the glass and grazed his body, leaving a four inch-long wound along his rib cage:

“The bullet slug was embedded above the inside of the front door, approximately 1 inch above the door trim, and approximately 4 inches from the right side of the door,” police report.

According to social media posts from the victim’s friends, the man who was hit is a student from Japan.

Adding another international component to the unusual case, police say one of the witnesses is a retired Italian police officer staying in the building as he visited on holiday:

Police found a single shell in a parking lot off Belmont Ave E:

Police also say that the area was busy with people that night “with many attendees coming and going” from an event at nearby events venue Fred Wildlife Refuge.

SPD continues to investigate the shooting.

I’m glad this person’s injury wasn’t life-threatening, but it’s a good reminder of the old saying: curiosity killed the cat. If you hear gunshots just outside your building, stay away from the window! Get down on the floor and call 911.
