E Pike’s Redhook Brewlab hosting weekend IPA fest

We can pout about big beer’s decision to play a big role in Capitol Hill’s brewing scene. Or we can enjoy some of the perks that come with major beer brands putting their assets to work creating the ultimate marketing: goodwill with good beer.

This weekend, E Pike’s Redhook Brewlab, owned and operated by global brew force Craft Beer Alliance of solar system dominating AB InBev, will host a celebration of the beer shelf dominating IPA:

Redhook Brewlab is throwing a three-day party to celebrate craft beer’s top style, the India Pale Ale, as it hosts IPA Daze from April 20 to April 22. The event will feature a total of 32 IPAs: 16 from Redhook, and 16 from a who’s who of Evergreen State brewers. Everyone will be bringing their “A” game – with a variety of takes on the IPA, from traditional and imperial IPAs to fruit IPAs and hazies. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Surfrider Foundation, Seattle Chapter.

There will be KEXP DJs and tunes. For some reason, there will also be a baby goat petting zoo on Friday, 4/20, from 5 to 7 PM.

But let’s get back to the beer part. “Over the three-day IPA Daze extravaganza, fest-goers will also have access to some of Washington’s best breweries, as guest IPAs will be made by: Elysian, Georgetown, Holy Mountain, Fremont, Black Raven, Crucible, Matchless, Chainline, Stoup, Aslan, Reuben’s, Wander, Hellbent, 20 Corners, and Silver City.” Attendees will also have access to “16 different takes on the style” from Nick Crandall and the Brewlab team.

While we know of one Capitol Hill beer joint that was considering an April Fools’ turning over each of its draught handles to an IPA before they decided that nobody would get the joke, the India Pale Ale remains the king of “craft beer.” Industry numbers indicate that around 27% of all supermarket craft sales are IPAs.

The IPA Daze event is the latest in the efforts from AB InBev’s Capitol Hill assets to grow their place in the city’s busy craft beer scene. CHS wrote here about Redhook’s honing of operations to focus on the E Pike brewery it opened last summer. Its Elysian sibling is also seeing renewed investment and will undergo a full overhaul of its brewing operations this summer. Elysian is also planning a big Pride party this summer and organizers say Redhook will also be closing its portion of E Pike for a beer garden and celebration of its own.

Redhook’s three-day event is free to attend but tokens will be required for beer purchases. Tokens are $1.50 each and one token equals one taster.

The IPA Daze event runs Friday through Sunday starting April 20th at the Redhook Brewlab, 714 E Pike. You can learn more at redhook.com/IPADAZE.
