Presiding Bishop Curry

“There is power in love, Don’t underestimate it. Don’t even oversentimentalize it,” the Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry said as he made international headlines with his 13-minute long sermon at last month’s royal wedding of Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle. “There is power, power in love.”

The Episcopal rock star is now on tour and will be visiting Washington this month with a planned Evensong service at Capitol Hill’s Saint Mark’s Cathedral on Thursday, June 14th at 7 PM:The service will feature music by the Cathedral Choir and the Evensong Choir. Following the service, there will be a short question and answer session with Presiding Bishop Curry and a reception in the cathedral nave. The event will also be live-streamed at www.saintmarks.org/livestream.

Doors will open at the 10th Ave E church at 5:30 PM.

Curry is the first African American Presiding Bishop in the Episcopal Church after he was elected to a nine-year term in 2015. Curry has spoken at length about being part of the Episcopal Branch of the Jesus Movement, “following Jesus into loving, liberating, and life-giving relationship with God, with each other and with the earth.”

During his visit to the Pacific Northwest, Curry will also appear in Bellingham, Olympia, and Vancouver, Washington.

In addition to his royal wedding fame, Curry is known for his strong support of civil and LGBTQ rights. Last summer, Curry called for inclusion in the wake of President Trump’s statements against transgender troops in the military. “I truly believe that the overwhelming goodness and kindness and sense of justice of the American people are summed up in the words of the Pledge of Allegiance,” Curry wrote “which says that we are ‘one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.’ Therein is the soul of America!”
