• 12th/Pine hate attack: The suspect in what police say was a bloody hate attack Sunday night on a couple just across the street from the East Precinct allegedly told officers he started the assault on the men because they were gay. According to the report on the Sunday, July 22nd just before 10:30 PM incident, police saw the fight unfold as the suspect and one of his victims fought and fell into a bush at the corner of 12th and Pine. An officer reportedly had to restrain the suspect to stop the beating as blood poured from a laceration to the victim’s head. Police say the suspect’s hands were also cut and bleeding as he used a “weed jar” to beat the victim. According to the report, after the men were separated, the suspect told police multiple times he was attacking the victims because the men are gay. According to one victim, the incident began when the suspect called the men “faggots” and one of the men confronted the suspect. The victim said he was in disbelief at the situation and being held back when the suspect spit in his face and then swung at him. The suspect was taken into custody by police and remains jailed for investigation of assault and a hate crime.
• Fire alarm burglary arrests: SPD has announced the arrest of two suspects in connection with a string of fire alarm burglaries across the city:
  Police arrested a pair of burglars, suspected of triggering apartment building fire alarms to cover break-ins over the last month, after they pulled the same scam Sunday evening in Greenwood. Officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Northeast Thornton Place to a report of a burglary Sunday night at 9:30 p.m. Police arrived and spoke with the victim who said they had to exit their apartment following a fire alarm. While speaking with officers, the victim began receiving notifications their credit cards were being used at a nearby store. Officers quickly began searching near the store and found two people that matched the description of the people detectives believed to be responsible for a string of similar burglaries. Officers stopped the 38-year-old man and 44-year-old woman and found them to be in possession of the victim’s car key.
  SPD says Major Crimes Task Force detectives responded to the scene and spoke with the suspects who later admitted to more than a dozen additional burglaries. Detectives booked the two into King County Jail for investigation of burglary, fraud, and multiple warrants. CHS heard from a few readers across the Hill hit by similar break-ins.
• Teacher pleads guilty to child porn: A former teacher at a private Capitol Hill school has pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography, the Department of Justice announced:
  A former Seattle schoolteacher was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Seattle to 18 months in prison and ten years of supervised release, announced First Assistant United States Attorney Helen M. Brunner. GABRIEL CRONIN, 42, a former teacher and robotics coach at Seattle Academy was arrested in November 2017, following a tip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). When questioned by Seattle Police CRONIN admitted he had viewed child pornography on his school provided laptop. At today’s sentencing hearing Chief U.S. District Judge Ricardo S. Martinez said CRONIN is “a highly educated and highly intelligent man who understands the damage that occurs to these victims, especially in the internet age… His actions contribute to that ongoing market that creates new sex abuse victims all around the world.”
