A 35-year-old man has been charged with a hate crime in the Sunday, July 22nd stabbing attack on two men during an altercation at 12th and Pine.

CHS previously reported on the attack here. The King County Prosecutor’s office has charged Caster Kwak with one count of malicious harassment.

According to police, the suspect stabbed one of his victims with broken glass as they wrestled in a fight started when Kwak saw the man and another man holding hands while crossing the street at 12th and Pine and started calling the men faggots.

During the fight, a “weed jar” police say Kwak was carrying shattered. Police say he used a shard to stab one of his victims during the fight leaving the man with lacerations to his face and upper body. The man’s injuries were not life threatening and he declined further medical attention, according to the police report on the attack.

A passing police officer witnessed the bloody scene as it unfolded directly across the street from the East Precinct headquarters and was able to restrain Kwak and take him into custody.

Prosecutors say the 35-year-old has a limited criminal history involving an arrest for marijuana possession in 2008. Kwak is charged with malicious harassment, the state’s hate crime statute, because he “endangered public safety by random selection due to bias and use of glass as a deadly weapon,” prosecutors write.

The Federal Way man remains jailed on $50,000 bail.
