Saturday’s national wave of demonstrations and marches for climate action led by a Seattle teenager included a march through the Central District.
Zero Hour, founded last year by Seattle teen Jamie Margolin, organized Saturday’s rally and march from Garfield to Pratt Park:
Enough is enough. We, the youth, believe that #thisisZeroHour to act on climate change. We cannot afford to wait any longer for adults to protect our right to the clean and safe environment, the natural resources we need to not just survive, but flourish. We know that we are the leaders we have been waiting for!
Saturday, Margolin was in Washington D.C. for a rally on the National Mall. “The march is a launch. It isn’t, ‘That’s it, we’re done,’” Margolin told the New York Times. “It means it doesn’t give them an excuse to be like, ‘I don’t know what the kids want.’ It’s like, ‘Yes, you do.’”
In Seattle, Saturday’s march was preceded by Thursday’s Youth Climate Lobby Day at City Hall where young people involved in the movement were slated for “lobbying elected officials all day and speaking to the press about their demands” for more aggressive climate action.
The Zero Hour movement joins efforts like March For Our Lives with children and teenagers pushing for progressive policies and taking a political approach to youth activism.
