It might just have been the calmest, coolest $20,000 heist in Capitol Hill history.

And it would have been even larger if the bandit hadn’t somehow dropped a massive stack of bills after he won a game of high stakes tug of war and beat a hasty retreat on Broadway.

Monday around 4:15 PM, Seattle Police were called to Seattle Central’s Broadway entrance to investigate the robbery involving a Loomis armored truck courier, a bag full of cash, and an ATM in need of servicing.

According to police, the guard said he set the bag down to work on the school ATM when the suspect came up from behind and seized the opportunity. According to the guard, the suspect and he both grabbed ahold of the bag but the suspect had the upper hand. The robber gave a big tug, wrenched the bag free, and fled, dropping a small pile of cash in the process. The rest was gone with the suspect. He was last seen headed north from the school’s entrance.

Arriving officers had only a general description to go on — a black, bearded male — and the suspect had a head start on police. According to the report, the guards did not pursue the man and waited ten minutes to call police about the heist — and, according to East Precinct radio dispatches, the ripoff might have happened even earlier in the afternoon.

A search of the area did not turn up the suspect or the rest of the cash but police were able to get security video from the school that shows the suspect “walking around the outside of the building, entering the building, then running out of the building with the money bag in his right hand.”

Police say the bag contained $24,000 in cash — all $20 bills.
