  • E Mercer fire: Seattle Fire responded to a smoky blaze overnight in the 1000-block of E Mercer and found what was described as a “derelict” detached garage in flames and an adjacent garage structure threatened by the spreading fire. First reported just before 4 AM Monday, the fire took arriving crews about 30 minutes to knock out. The house and property are lined up for demolition to make way for six new townhomes from developer Sensa Homes. Arriving fire crews were told that people might be living in the garage structures but nobody was found and there were no reported injuries. Seattle Fire investigated what started the fire but was not able to determine a cause. Damage was estimated at $50,000. Seattle Fire was also dispatched to a Broadway apartment building to a reported fire around 4:15 AM but it turned out residents were smelling smoke from E Mercer.
  • 12th Ave Arts fire: Good news at the 12th Ave Arts building in the 1600 block of 12th Ave. Sunday night, SFD was called to the mixed-use and affordable housing apartment building to a reported fourth floor blaze. Arriving units found that the smoke was coming from someone’s burned dinner and the scene was quickly cleared.
  • I-5 death: Traffic backed up on northbound I-5 last Thursday during the evening commute after a reported fatality on the freeway. The stretch of I-5 through downtown below Capitol Hill is near areas frequented by homeless campers and has been the location of several recent incidents involving driver-pedestrian collisions. The Washington State Patrol tells CHS that Thursday’s incident sadly involved a victim who jumped to their death. Here are two resources to help those in need: National suicide-prevention hotline: 800-SUICIDE. Local Crisis Clinic: (206) 461-3222.

According to the report on the incident, the burglar was able to enter the business without damaging any doors or glass before making off with a tablet computer and a cash box containing $150. SPD is investigating.

According to the SPD report, the suspect entered the AM/PM market in the 400 block of 12th Ave and asked about the price of a pack of smokes:
