CHS Pics | A Capitol Hill neon typo

Nothing drives the self-appointed copy editors of Capitol Hill more batty than the “Capital Hill” typo. Depending on your personality type, you’ll either want to make sure your pedantic friends never see this new neighborhood beer sign — or that they see it right away. We’re not giving away the location to protect the innocent and guilty, alike. Clues only in the comments, please.

From the reflection in the window it seems to be in the thick of Pike/Pine. Probably a new establishment, and Capitol hill is rather morphing into capital hill. Maybe they’re just being prescient.

As in “you’ll need lots of Capital to live here.” Might as well change the spelling officially.

What a beautiful sign. If it weren’t for the typo, it would be A Piece of Art.

Might it be a place where I could get A Greasy Tart?

At least it doesn’t say “Cap Hill”

Nothing says new residents or bridge and tunnel like “Cap Hill”

I dunno, I’ve lived in the area for over a decade now and me & my friends all just say Cap Hill… It’s what we said throughout our 20’s and has stuck with us.

Yeah, I know. You all ruined it. I’ve lived here 25 years and Cap Hill is a disgusting phrase but I’m over caring because I’m sure whatever it morphs into next will disgust you so we’re even.

I wonder if during the 40s and 50s people said “CapHill”, and people at the time got their panties all in a wad about it? I’ve been here 22 yrs and been hearing people get worked up about it the whole time.

I remember reading a column by Jean Godden, when she wrote for the Seattle Times (before she was a City Council member), remarking about either a#10 bus with destination “Capital Hill”, how it ‘must have been somebody not from here’– I guess *everyone* in Seattle can spell properly? Well, unless they drive for Metro, maybe?

You know what else I wonder about? When did Capitol Hill become “THE Hill”? We have:
Capitol Hill,
Queen Anne Hill,
First Hill,
Beacon Hill,
Crown Hill,
Yesler Hill and Denny Hill are gone now…
but Capitol Hill is THE Hill? Um…ok.
Nah, that’s not self-absorbed at all.

Late to the game, but:

Back when I was going to UW, around the turn of the millennium, we used to always say “Let’s go up to The Hill”. Seemed like everyone knew that meant Capitol Hill, because nobody “goes” to those other hills, at least 20 years ago.

Nothing says, “I’m a snobby elitist” like caring about Cap Hill vs the Hill vs. whatever someone else calls it.

And nothing says, “I wish I cool enough to live in New York City” like calling others “bridge and tunnel.” Not everyone uses the 90, man! Some come from scenic Kent on I5! No bridges or tunnels! Also, there is both an economic and racial component to “bridge and tunnel,” so cool. Use it to fly your flag freely!

Capital Hill, on the other hand, is offensive.

Of course it should read, “Das Kapital Hill.”

Let’s be thankful for the small blessings. What if it read “Capitol Heel’s Beer”?
