In the beginning, there were no chicken sandwiches on Capitol Hill.

Then there was Ma’ono at the Rhino Room. But that didn’t last long. Then Sunset Fried Chicken sandwiches rose at 12th Ave’s Rachel Ginger Beer. But Ma’ono came back to the Hill and took over that gig. Now, Sunset is back and Queer/Bar is the happy landing spot.

The spicy chicken sliders from Capitol Hill-centered master of the small space Monica Dimas are now taking over the kitchen at Queer/Bar, the 11th Ave gay bar and — now — fried chicken sammie purveyor.

Dimas says the move to take over Queer/Bar’s kitchen is a “good partnership” and good for patrons. Eater is reporting an “expanded menu” including “the OG (fried chicken, dill pickles, cabbage slaw, and mayo) and the GT (a General Tso’s-inspired sandwich with a sweet-and-spicy sauce, daikon, cilantro, and mayo), as well as options like chicken wings (with GT barbecue or Cajun sauce), Cajun popcorn chicken, fried green tomatoes, Caesar salad, and a burger.”

The change at Queer/Bar comes after a year of business at the bar that opened “to preserve what’s left of LGBTQIA+ Capitol Hill nightlife” in late 2017. Joey Burgess took on the venture and neighboring Grim’s as sole owner in the wake of the Dave Meinert accusations earlier this year. Early plans for “vegan and vegetarian bar food” featuring rotating and spotlighting local queer chefs did not pan out.

Dimas, meanwhile, is also working on a new Sunset at Sea-Tac Airport and recently her April-born Little Neon Taco on First Hill was named restaurant of the year.

Capitol Hill’s strong fried chicken game also has a milestone to celebrate — happy one year of business to Bok a Bok.
