Hakeem remembered — Family identifies 21-year-old gunned down in Cal Anderson — UPDATE

Family says the young man who died in Wednesday night’s shooting in Cal Anderson was trying to break up a fight when he was gunned down in the middle of the busy park.

A family member identified the victim for CHS as 21-year-old Hakeem Talley. The family is seeking donations to help defray funeral and burial costs. The victim also leaves behind a young child. UPDATE: The King County Medical identifies the victim as Hakeem Salahud-din. He had recently been released from jail after serving time for a sentence in a domestic violence case when he pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm. CHS has asked for clarification from the family regarding their identification of the victim.

“Trying to break up a fight was all he wanted to do. And because of that, he is no longer with us,” they write. “We are so devastated that we have to lay another young soul to rest. Another young man, gone way (too) soon. Hakeem was a father, a son, and a brother.”

Known as “WildBoii” to friends, the victim previously attended high school in Federal Way.

Witness accounts shared with CHS have not specified what the altercation near the park’s basketball court was about but detail a scene with multiple people involved and a physical altercation that ended with at least one person pistol whipped and the 21-year-old shot in the back of the head. A 911 caller reported hearing one gunshot fired in the incident and seeing a person down near the basketball court according to East Precinct radio dispatches.

Police were called to Nagle Place around 9:40 PM and found the victim down and not responsive. Seattle Fire says the man died at the scene.

Despite multiple witnesses, police have yet to announce any arrests in the case. Anyone with information is asked to call the SPD Homicide tip line at (206) 233-5000.

The Cal Anderson murder is the second fatal shooting on Capitol Hill this year. In January, 24-year-old Jafar Mack was gunned down in the Harvard Market parking lot above Pike and Broadway. That shooting also remains unsolved by police.

How can there be no leads despite multiple witnesses? Is there a description of the suspects, or any other information about them?

Sarah: I suggest you check with a Police Officer. Involved witnesses typically “ didn’t see anything”. See any number of newspaper Police Beat reports..

Yep – and all those witnesses who pretend they “didn’t see anything” are a primary reason for the cycle of gun violence continuing. Stats show shooters (like the one in this case) will use their guns again and again until they are caught.

Whats the point behind adding that he was just realeased from jail? This is an article about a 21 year old being murdered at a basketball court NOT a biography. Add facts about the incident not his past or “criminal history” which is completely irrelevant from what has happened.

Because it adds context Cody; in the same way the picture and the quote about being a father, son, and brother does.

My condolences to his family and may he rest in peace.

Why say that Hakeem had served time in jail? There’s no context or reason for it. What does this random fact contribute? He was murdered! His family and friends are grieving, our neighborhood is in shock, and you want to bring that up?

It is relevant. It’s a fact that can be proven. Totally reasonable.

How is it relevant ? It brings negative to those trying to change their lives.

How is his jail time a “random” fact? It contributes to knowing what kind of people are in Cal Anderson park at that time of day, what kind of people they associate with. He did jail time for domestic violence. He was not some good samaritan helping someone else. He was a contributor to the crime problem that’s killing this city.

If you know the facts Hakeem was playing basketball, Made a change in his life and trying to do the right thing by breaking up a fight between a male and female and paid the price.
When people judge others ( which is not our right) and makes their life difficult without knowing the entire past… that is how society wont change.
Help make a change instead of judging others by their past. Believing in others and supporting change is how our future should be.
Hakeem paid his due to society, it had no relevance to this murder.
There is no perfect person in this world. Be a better person and help others, instead of just complain. Those who complain, what do you really do to make a change in our country?
