  • E Denny crisis: A large police response was joined by crews from Seattle Fire Friday after a man apparently suffering a mental health crisis reportedly broke through a window of a Capitol Hill apartment building and caused a major disturbance inside. According to East Precinct radio dispatches, police were contacted just before 5 PM to the report that a man had smashed through a first floor window and entered the Pantages Apartment building in the 800 block of E Denny just off Broadway. Responding police found smoke in the building as they tracked down the suspect in a fifth floor unit where he was taken into custody. It’s not clear what the source of the smoke was. Seattle Fire says its crew did not find a fire in the building. There were no reported serious injuries. Earlier in the afternoon, a man with a similar physical description to the suspect had contacted police to report he believed he was being followed by a large group of Hispanic men. UPDATE: Capitol Hill Housing tells us the initial report that a man busted a window was not correct and that he pushed through a screen to gain entrance. Meanwhile, the smoke turned out to be “material from a fire extinguisher being expelled.”
  • Right-wing group makes rounds: Capitol Hill bar patrons and neighbors greeted a group of right-wing protesters marching around the neighborhood Friday night looking for a scrap with boos and middle fingers. CHS received multiple reports about the small group’s movements but we aren’t aware of any serious clashes or police activity related to the march. Emerson Salon on E Pike suffered a broken window after its Pride display had just been installed but it wasn’t clear if that was the result of right-wing vandals or typical Friday night Pike/Pine shenanigans.

  • Stabbing charges: The “bag of knives” reported initially by police turned out to be a package of scissors according to charges brought in a May 18th early morning stabbing at Broadway and Pike. “In charging documents, a QFC employee told police that Ivan Patrick Sabon, 46, grabbed two scissors from inside the store, said, ‘I want to fight. I don’t give a f—,” and exited the store without paying for them,’ KIRO reports. Sabon’s criminal history includes 77 arrests in King County since 1993, KIRO says.
  • Driver harassment warning: A woman who had to leap from a car to escape harassment from her driver after being picked up last month outside a Capitol Hill bar is warning others and has sparked an investigation of the Uber driver, Q13 Fox reports. Sid Grogan said the driver “pulled over and put his hazard lights on” then “turned around, looked at her and again asked where he could take the two of them.” “When she repeated that she just wanted to go home, she said he slowly turned around, locked the car and started driving,” Q13 reports. Grogan was able to fight her way out of the car but is warning other riders to take care. Uber said it has suspended the driver pending a police investigation.
  • IHOP melee charges: A man has been charged with assault in a melee at the E Madison IHOP caught on video that went viral last month. According to court records on the May 5th, 4 AM incident, the incident was sparked by a conversation involving race and religion. KIRO reports: Seattle police said they responded and arrested Culpepper, who told them he was eating when he overheard the other man and his “mixed-race” girlfriend discussing “African-Americans and church.” Culpepper took offense and interjected, claiming the other man then called him a ‘N*****,” charging papers say, and told police “he didn’t want to look like a punk.” A trial in Seattle Municipal Court has been set for July. Culpepper has pleaded not guilty.

I have it on good authority that the “smoke” at Pantages was chemical dust from a hallway fire extinguisher the guy tried to use as a defensive weapon. The dust cloud he created was apparently thick enough to set off the fire alarm.

Now we get to pay for a jury trial for a guy who walks up and slaps the “dog shit” out of a seated person who poses no threat to him. Yay.
