November is National Novel Writing Month, also known as NaNoWriMo, where the goal is to write a 50,000-word manuscript in 30 days. Capitol Hill happens to be blessed with several resources including courses and events offered at Hugo House and writer meetups, such as the Capitol Hill Writing Meetup.

To distract from your task, here is a selection of neighborhood events and happenings. Maybe some will inspire your next chapter. Also, a reminder for Sounders fans — light rail will be at full power this weekend thanks to Sound Transit construction work being completed ahead of schedule.

WEDNESDAY, Nov. 6:  StolenYouth will be giving a presentation on the intersection of foster care, homelessness, and child sex trafficking within King County.  Washington State DCYF Secretary Ross Hunter, CEO of YouthCare Melinda Giovengo, and Washington State Representative Tina Orwall will be there.  Students are free and General admission is $10. Town Hall, 7 – 8:30 PM.

THURSDAY, Nov. 7:  The Greater Seattle Business Association (GSBA) will be hosting Power Connect: Capitol Hill Streetscapes to address the rapid pace of change within the Capitol Hill neighborhood.  Sam Zimbabwe, Seattle Department of Transportation Director will be the guest speaker.  It’s a chance to meet neighbors and learn what the future holds in store for Capitol Hill.  Free to the public. 1318 E. Union Street, 5 PM – 7 PM

FRIDAY, Nov. 8: The Vera Project’s annual A Drink for the Kids benefit series is now known as Cool Times & True Friends. You can get a start on supporting the nonprofit at Elysian Brewing Capitol Hill. A portion of beer proceeds go to support The Vera Project’s all-ages programming. Elysian Brewing, 11 AM to 11:30 PM

Three days past Election Day the importance of our voting system and democracy is still fresh.  One of the most important tools for promoting political change is the spoken and written word.  Write Our Democracy, according to Hugo House, was an international protest to the 2016 Inauguration, but since then has stepped up to support freedom of free speech.  Write Our Democracy: Writers Respond is free and open to the public. Hugo House, 7 PM.

SATURDAY, Nov. 9: The 9th annual Short Run Comix and Arts Festival is taking place this weekend.  There will be approximately 240 art exhibitors, swag bags, and other offerings.  Special guests will include: Jasjyot Singh Hans, Glynnis Fawkes, and Malaka Gharib.  Admission is free and there will be a bake sale with $2 coffee. Fisher Pavilion, 11 AM – 6 PM

Want to help create a Capitol Hill “superblock”? Volunteer with the Capitol Hill EcoDistrict to help collect information for a “Public Life Study” and sign up for a brief training and shift on the streets of Pike/Pine. They’re looking to staff teams of two for three hour shifts covering from 8 AM to 11 PM. “Help us observe the way folks move through and linger in public spaces on Capitol Hill to better understand how our community uses them,” the EcoDistrict invites. Pike/Pine, 8 AM to 11 PM

SUNDAY, Nov. 10:  Co-presented by Short Run and the Elliot Bay Book Company, Malaka Gharib will be discussing her graphic memoir, I Was Their American Dream.  The book portrays her journey through multiple cultures as she is growing up and coming of age.  The Elliot Bay Book Company, 3 PM.

Puppets at the Wildrose? That’s a recipe for a great Sunday night! Check out An evening with Peppercorn and Friends, “an evening filled with comedy, singing, dancing, and a little shadow theatre.” $10. The Wildrose, 7 PM

Monday, Nov. 11: No school. Free parking. Salute a vet, it’s Veterans Day.
