Police arrest one, recover stolen gun after Sunday night search in Central District

The area near a large party Sunday night with a loud bout of fireworks was scoured in a long police and K9 search after a group of people driving in the area tried to flee from an officer attempting to conduct a traffic stop.

Police say a known gang member was arrested in the hours-long search that included a yard by yard manhunt, help from neighbors providing security video of the fleeing suspects to arriving officers, and a stolen firearm recovered from a garbage can.

The incident began just after 8 PM when a patrol officer attempted to stop the vehicle carrying the group of people in the 500 block of 23rd Ave. Multiple people were reporting fleeing the vehicle on foot after the car was ditched nearby at 21st and Fir:

“The vehicle doors were left ajar. There was an open alcohol container and several bags and containers of marijuana left behind in the car,” the report reads. “There was a bag of marijuana in the center area between the driver and front passenger seat which was accessible by both the driver and passenger.”

After a witness reported seeing one of the suspects had stopped near trash cans, an officer found a loaded .38 caliber revolver ditched in the bottom of a blue recycling can.

Police say a K9 track that started with the recycling bin led them to a nearby apartment stairwell where they found a teenager trying to hid. Police say she told them the car belonged to her father. She was taken into custody to be interviewed by police.

The K9 search then turned up the suspect seen ditching the gun and he was taken into custody on 19th Ave. Police say the suspect is on probation after a robbery conviction and that he admitted “he is an active Deuce O gang member.” Video from a nearby residence that captured his flight helped police identify the suspect, according to the report.

The suspect was arrested and booked for attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm, and possession of a stolen firearm.

Earlier in the night, police were called to the area after loud explosions that were reported to be fireworks.

A large party in a neighborhood where people are more likely to die from COVID-19? Sounds like a date with Darwin – but unfortunately it’s these idiots’ parents and grandparents who will pay the price.

Also, I remember the days when legalize-it advocates always told us legal weed would slow the illicit & violent drug trade. Tell that to the people who make millions off the massive secondary market that arose, where dealers simply re-sell legal weed to minors. And where 5-10% of all legally-grown weed is syphoned off and sold by gangs. There is an amazing amount of violence associated with underground cannabis sales and use.
