Once the Seattle Automobile Company, 11th and Pike building home to Retrofit, Cafe Pettirosso up for landmarks vote

Thanks to 2020-era videoconference technology, Pike/Pine could have a new landmark this week celebrating Capitol Hill’s auto row history.

The 1916-built Baker Linen building at 11th and Pike is set to go through the final stage of the city’s landmark preservation process Wednesday afternoon in an online session necessitated by the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

CHS reported on the nomination of the property owned by neighborhood developer Liz Dunn moving forward in the landmarks process earlier this year.

Currently, retailer Retrofit Home and Cafe Pettirosso call the building’s street level home while offices fill the upper floors.

Dunn is planning a seismic overhaul and the addition of two stories of office space above the building and is working with the Capitol Hill Historical Society to establish protections for the property originally created as “as an automobile showroom, garage, and service building” by architect Sønke Engelhart Sønnichsen “in the Commercial or Chicago School style.”

You can watch the proceedings — and speak up with public comment — Wednesday afternoon. The presentation from Dunn and the historical society in support of the nomination is below. You can review the full nomination document (PDF) here.
