Email threats against Sawant from city account investigated

City Councilmember Kshama Sawant says City Hall says a series of threatening emails targeting her from a Seattle Fire Department account needs to be taken more seriously.

In an announcement coinciding with Inauguration Day festivities for President Joe Biden, Sawant criticized city officials for failing to act on the series of emails that began in December.

“I believe these emails must be taken very seriously given the current political context with an emboldened right wing nationally, the specific threatening content of the emails, and the fact that they originate from a City of Seattle email account,” Sawant wrote. “There should be a thorough investigation into this matter immediately — particularly in light of the possible link between these emails and the far right protests planned for Biden’s inauguration tomorrow, January 20.”

Sawant’s office says officials said they were investigating the situation after the Seattle Fire employee the account belongs to denied sending the threats. But the email threats continued.

“If you know what’s good, you would know it’s time to go,” one early message read. “If you need help leaving, try jumping head first off the top floor of your building. I’ll even come push you.”

In the message, the sended purported to be a “Capital Hill” resident.

The Seattle Times reports that the Seattle Police Department is now investigating the threats.

Meanwhile, Mayor Jenny Durkan’s office says threats against officials have been on the rise.

“Over the last year, Mayor Durkan and many elected officials have faced an exponential increase in death threats, vandalism, and targeted hate speech,” a statement on the matter reported by KOMO read. “Mayor Durkan has continuously denounced any violence and hate speech towards any elected officials and small businesses. Violent threats, vandalism, and misogynistic and homophobic hate speech are not acceptable in our community.”

Threats and attacks on politicians and invading their personal lives are a low blow towards anyone, she might now consider how it might’ve felt for Jenny Durkan this summer after having invaded her privacy .

I voted for Sawant because she was a socialist. I support her recall because I don’t support anarchy and because regular working people and families and businesses seem to be low on her list of priorities

Well, she’s a socialist. Businesses are never going to be on her priority list, and “regular working people” will only be used to get into a position of power.

Your voting preferences have nothing to do with Sawant receiving death threats.

This threat is very graphic and should be unacceptable to any good human whether you support Councilperson Sawant or not. Full stop.

also sending such a hateful email from a gov account was the dumbest thing to do. “Malignant idiocy deserves no leniency” is a good rule to go by these days.

You do realize that it is incredibly easy to spoof an email senders address… You don’t even need to be a hacker, as there’s multiple sites online that will do it for you for nothing… Just seeing the .gov on the header means about as much as seeing your buddy’s email address there when you get a scam mail claiming that they are in Paris and lost their wallet…

Show the source code so that we can see the routing and see if there’s even a whiff of a chance that the person who knows so much about Seattle that they are claiming to have lived on Capital Hill for several years is actually from anywhere even near here.

You realize it wasn’t her who teargassed? The cops did. Under direction from Durkan.

Yes, I’m aware. That’s not what I’m talking about.

Some public officials get hate mail on a regular basis…..ask Jenny Durkan…but they do not publicize the threats in the media. Sawant is facing a serious recall effort, and I think she is doing this to try and gain some sympathy for herself. Nice try.

It’s funny, when the threats and bad behavior are directed her way, everyone needs to drop what they’re doing and find the perpetrator(s). But when her Neo-Marxist minions break windows and spray graffiti all over our City, it’s a good thing. Like Trump, she needs to go!
