With plans coming together for a safe, in-person Pride celebration on Capitol Hill later this summer, another neighborhood celebration of LGBTQ+ culture will mark its second year as a virtual event.

Hopefully by 2022, we can gather in theaters again but the 2021 edition of the Translations: Seattle Transgender Film Festival from Capitol Hill cinema nonprofit Three Dollar Bill will begin Thursday on phones, laptops, and home theaters near you:

Translations: Seattle Transgender Film Festival is returning in 2021 for our second virtual edition for our 16th year! We are so excited to continue to showcase the newest trans talent in the film industry. 100% of our films will be subtitled/captioned this year, as a part of our larger efforts to make our programs as accessible as possible to the vast spectrums of the queer and trans communities.

The festival’s programmers say this year’s event comes as “the change we need to bring about has arrived, particularly here in the openly liberal space of the Pacific Northwest.”

“While our struggles are not the same as in Brazil or Ukraine, where government sanctioned annihilation of trans and queer identified folx happens every day, it remains true that many of us here and around the world desperately need to know we are not alone,” co-lead programmers Cooper Sealy and Mocha James Herrup write. “It is indeed a powerful act to see ourselves on screen, to tell our own stories, and to exist in community with each other. This is the work we do. For that, we are humbled and grateful. In the midst of so much darkness, we invite you to spend some time in the (spot)light and celebrate trans lives with us.”

The 16th year of the Translations festival includes Drama Queen, a Vietnamese film from director Kay Nguyen, Sweden’s Always Amber, and the Fck Fscism collection of short films “that touch on the stories of resistance during our current global crisis.” You’ll also want to tune in for panels and a daily Tea Time conversation series with guests, news, and highlights.

Tickets for individual screenings and festival passes are available via Three Dollar Bill Cinema at threedollarbillcinema.org/translations.
